Say you're looking to get a Wisconsin fishing license, but you don't know how much they cost, what are the rules and are there any deals.

Here is everything you need to know before you go fishing in one of Wisconsin's bountiful lakes or rivers.

Do I need a license to go fishing in Wisconsin?

A license is required unless you are 15 years under or born before 1927, per the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website. So if you haven't had your Sweet 16 or nearing your 100th birthday you're free, if not, you need a license.

Discounted licenses are available under the following conditions:

  • A first-time buyer who hasn't purchased a license before in Wisconsin or who haven't in the past 10 years.
  • A one-day license for fishers only, say, going out on the lake for one day while on vacation
  • Wisconsin resident anglers can earn points towards a cheaper license if they've referred a new angler.
  • Wisconsin residents who are active-duty military on furlough, leave or veterans

How much does it cost for a Wisconsin resident fishing license or fishing stamp?

There's a variety of prices depending on what you're looking to do and different ages.

An annual fishing license is $20 and a one-day is $8. A first-time buyer will pay $5 and those individuals 16- or 17-years-old or 65+, those who are disabled are $7. The cost for disabled veterans is $3.

If you're fishing with a spouse, the rate is $31 per couple.

Other rates are $10 for an inland trout or Great Lake salmon/trout stamp while a two-day Great Lakes fishing or inland lake trout fishing stamp is $14.

I'm not a Wisconsin resident, how much do I have to pay to go fishing?

An annual license for a non-Wisconsin resident is $55 or a family pass is $70 but first-time buyers can get a license for $28.75.

There are also one-day ($15), four-day ($29) and 15-day ($33) licenses and a 15-day family license ($45). Military and student rates for non-residents are $20 for the year.
