So it was that skiier Hunter Hess formed his left hand in the shape of an “L” on Friday — a response, he said, to President Donald Trump calling him a “loser” on social media.
At a news conference at the start of the Milan-Cortina Olympics, skiers were asked how they felt about representing the country while the Department of Homeland Security under Trump has resulted in four known shooting deaths.
“If it aligns with my moral values, I feel like I’m representing it,” he said. “Just because I’m wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the U.S.”
Trump responded to Hess’ remarks on his Truth Social account: “Hess, a real Loser, says he doesn’t represent his Country in the current Winter Olympics. If that’s the case, he shouldn’t have tried out for the Team, and it’s too bad he’s on it.”
Hess, a freestyle skier in men’s freeski halfpipe, ranked fifth in the field after two runs in Friday’s qualifying round.

"Apparently, I'm a loser."
