Final
Rockies 8, Twins 5
Starting pitcher performance
Rookie Mike Paredes pitched into the sixth inning for the first time in his major league career, allowing three runs in his 5 1/3-inning start. Paredes was touched for a pair of home runs from Rockies all-star Hunter Goodman, allowing one in the first inning on a breaking ball and another on a fastball two innings later.
He gave up one other run in the outing before leaving in the sixth inning with a pair of runners on, a jam reliever Taylor Rogers was able to get the Twins out of without giving up further damage.
Player of the Game
Those two longballs were part of Goodman’s three homer night, the first of his career. The other came in the seventh inning when Goodman crushed a 90.1 mile per hour pitch left over the heart of the plate from Kody Funderburk, striking it at 113.3 mph off the bat.
Goodman, who homered Friday as well, now has 25 home runs on the season, tying him with Byron Buxton and Yordan Alvarez for second in the major leagues behind just Kyle Schwarber (29).
Key moment
Goodman’s seventh-inning home run was the separator in the game. Up until that point, the Twins were still hanging around, trailing by just a run. The Twins scored in the first on a Kody Clemens RBI knock and tacked on another run in the sixth with Victor Caratini’s sacrifice fly bringing home Josh Bell, who tripled before him.
That was all they managed against starter Michael Lorenzen, who entered the day with a 7.11 ERA, in his 5 2/3 innings of work.
Goodman’s longball broke the game open and the Rockies tacked on another two runs in the eighth inning off reliever Marco Raya, who was making his major league debut. Raya walked the first batter before giving up a home run to Kyle Karros. He threw two innings in his debut, including a scoreless ninth.
A rally in the ninth inning during which Trevor Larnach hit bases-clearing double brought the Twins within three runs, that was as close they would come in the loss.
Up next
The Twins will sent Connor Prielipp (2-5, 5.17 ERA) to the mound for the series finale, which will begin at 1:10 p.m. The Rockies will counter with Ryan Feltner (2-2, 4.79 ERA).
