HS TRACK AND FIELD: Abington Heights’ Piccotti finishes 17th at New Balance National Championships

Abington Heights’ Anthony Piccotti had the top performance among athletes from the Lackawanna Track Conference competing at the New Balance National Championship track and field meet Thursday at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field.

Piccotti finished 17th in the freshman division of the pole vault. He cleared 12 feet, 5.5 inches. River Valley, California’s Colt Craig, won the national title with a height of 14-9.

Wallenpaupack’s Ryan Vargo finished 26th in the championship division discus. He had a best distance of 163 feet, 6 inches on the second of his three throws in the preliminary round. He also marked 157-0 on his final throw. Anthony Mason from Crofton Track Club in Maryland set a meet record with his winning throw of 209-5.

Abington Heights’ Aliya Lucarelli finished 32nd in the freshman 100 in 12.53 seconds. Paison Sanders of The St. James Academy in Virginia won the final later in the day with a meet record time of 11.62.

Western Wayne’s Sadie Booths competed in the championship division discus. The District 2 Class 2A champion failed to get a mark. Madison Davis of Atkins Track, from North Carolina, won the national title with a distance of 167-6.

What’s ahead

On Friday, Mid Valley’s Olivia Thomas starts her busy weekend at the national championship meet.

Thomas competes in the freshman division long jump at 3:30 p.m. She won a Class 2A silver medal at the PIAA Championships in late May at Shippensburg University and is the top seed for the event.

On Saturday, Thomas competes as the No. 1 seed in the freshman division triple jump at 10 a.m. She won the PIAA Class 2A championship in the event this spring. She hits the track for the 100 hurdles trials at 10:53 a.m.

Lucarelli is back in action for the freshman division 200 on Saturday at 1:45 p.m. Lakeland’s Raine Kearney will compete in the freshman division girls javelin Saturday at 9 a.m. Abington Heights’ Justin Lezinski is scheduled to compete in the middle school division shot put Saturday at 10 a.m.

Wallenpaupack’s Aiden Janowicz races in the championship division 800 Sunday at 1:47 p.m.

adidas championships

Abington Heights sisters Kiana Seid and Tayla Seid are competing at the adidas National Championship meet in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Kiana is in the national elite division pole vault on Friday at 1 p.m. and will compete in the national elite division high jump Sunday at 9 a.m.

Tayla will be in the middle school division long jump Friday at 1 p.m. She will also be in the middle school division pole vault Saturday at 8 a.m.
