NEW YORK – Aaron Judge was in the daily hitters meeting at Yankee Stadium, but he wasn’t going near a batter’s box again Wednesday night.

As the Yankees were in the process of dropping another one-run game, 5-4 to the Cleveland Guardians, their irreplaceable captain was heading for more imaging on his ribcage area.

Does that mean the Yankees fear the possibility of a fracture, like the rib stress fracture Judge suffered late in 2019, that lingered into spring training the following year?

“I don’t want to speak out of turn. I don’t know that yet,’’ said manager Aaron Boone, on the third anniversary of Judge slamming his foot into the Dodger Stadium wall, costing him 42 games.

“Obviously, it’s to a point where he’s not playing,'' said Boone. "We just want to make sure that we get a really strong diagnosis of things.’’

A specialist who examined Judge and looked at Monday’s original imaging confirmed the diagnosis of a bone bruise to the upper right ribcage area, which has caused Judge’s shoulder-area soreness.

But the specialist recommended the additional imaging “to get some more specific spots’’ around the rib-chest area, Boone said.

On the field Wednesday, Gerrit Cole’s third post-Tommy John surgery start saw the Yanks’ ace give up his first four runs of the year – including three home runs.

Cole generally felt his command stayed sharp during his 5.1 innings, with efficient outs.

His only walk was to the last batter he faced, and the only pitch he really regretted was 1-0 slider that Rhys Hoskins popped for a two-run homer.

Jose Ramirez had two more hits against Cole, including a solo homer in the sixth, giving him a .423 (11-for-26) career average against Cole.

"A Hall of Famer,'' Cole said of his Cleveland nemesis.

Solo homers by Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Jose Caballero (Judge’s right field sub) didn’t supply enough for a lineup that had just four at-bats with runners in scoring position (0-for-4), with the lost-at-sea Austin Wells now batting .169 with a .544 OPS.

These Yanks have now lost 10 of 13 games this year to plus-.500 clubs and are 6-12 in one-run games.

If it’s a mystery as to when Judge might return at full strength, the reality is much clearer.

“Obviously, Aaron means a lot to us’’ but injuries are “part of the game,’’ said Cole, fresh off a 14-month elbow rehab.

“You’ve got to find a way to step up in those situations, and that’s what we’ll do.’’

Boone anticipated having more clarity on Judge’s issue by Thursday, as the Yankees try to avoid a three-game sweep by the AL Central-leading Guardians.

Meanwhile, Judge’s day-to-day status could quickly turn into an IL stint.

Boone believes that Judge’s recent output – a .180 average (11-for-61) and .550 OPS with one homer over his last 16 games – is related to his rib/shoulder issue.

Yet, Judge hasn’t spoken publicly about the problem and the newest imaging – they hope – should carry the definitive say.

“We just want clarity on what exactly we’re dealing with,’’ said Boone. “Then we can set the course of action and kind of have an idea of what the timeline is going to be.’’
