Look, there's no need to sugarcoat it. Inevitably, some fans of the losing sports team in a big game will want to blame the officiating, regardless of whether the criticism has merit. No one wants to blame their favorite team for playing poorly, so you blame it on the people with a whistle in hand.
Even still, I'm not sure why the referees for Game 4 of the NBA Finals gave Karl-Anthony Towns such a questionable and harmful early offensive foul, his second in the first 65 seconds of the game.
When you look at the replay, Towns doesn't appear to do anything all that egregious when trying to drive toward the rim on Victor Wembanyama. Where's the hook? If anything, I would argue that Wembanyama makes more illegal contact, even though, from my vantage point, I wouldn't have given him a foul either!
I don't think I need to explain why this foul call was harmful for the Knicks' second-best player. If New York is to win the NBA Finals, it needs Towns on the floor as much as possible. He can't be in foul trouble. Unfortunately, he took a questionable call here on the chin. We'll see how the Knicks can weather the storm.
