The 2026 FIFA World Cup is about to come to a close. Taking place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the 2026 World Cup Final will see reigning champions Argentina facing Spain. Plus, FIFA is planning a star-studded halftime show and closing ceremony.

Spain is chasing its second World Cup. Their first came in 2010 in South Africa when they beat the Netherlands 1-0 during extra time. In this year’s World Cup, the European champions rallied after a surprising 0-0 draw against Cape Verde to quietly dominate with a stellar defence, allowing only one goal the entire tournament (during their 2-1 quarterfinal win against Belgium). This performance trend was cemented in the semifinals when La Roja beat powerhouse France 2-0.
Argentina’s journey to the final has been more precarious than expected for a dominant team with the world’s best player. Besides England, Argentina never faced a team in FIFA’s top 15, and most matches still come down to the wire. Lionel Messi has once again played a crucial role in Argentina’s journey to the final with a tournament-leading eight goals (tied with Kylian Mbappé), although it was Lautaro Martínez who scored the game-winning goal against England in the semifinal.
