CHAMPAIGN — An absent Kylan Boswell sported a white sweatsuit during Illinois’ matchup against Maryland on Wednesday. His absence is due to an untimely fractured bone in his right hand that will sideline him for at least a month.

Unfortunate for Illinois, considering how close this iteration of the team was to firmly settling into their roles ahead of entering a heavy stretch of conference play with trips to Purdue and Nebraska for two of its next four games.

Boswell had established himself as Illinois’ best defender — on a team not known for defending as one of its key attributes. And leading up to Maryland’s Wednesday night visit, the Terrapins had won two straight and heavily featured David Coit, who had scored a combined 73 points in those games.

But Illinois’ roster quality was not tested — at least not fully — during what became an 89-70 beatdown of Maryland.

“It’s a game where we kind of don’t know what to expect going in, when you’re minus a vital piece in Kylan,” said Illinois head coach Brad Underwood.

With the sidelining of Boswell, Illinois, head coach Brad Underwood chose to trot out Jake Davis in his place. For what it’s worth, there was an extended stretch during the first half where Illinois’ defense struggled mightily.
