Senegal and Iraq meet on Friday in a desperate bid to qualify for the knockout stages of FIFA World Cup 2026.

The odds are heavily against Senegal and Iraq as the two teams collide at BMO Field on Friday each needing a win to stand even an outside shot of making the last 32 at World Cup 2026. Neither team has managed to secure so much as a point from their opening defeats to both France and Norway and require a last-gasp win just to give themselves a chance at advancing.
Even a win for Iraq in particular may not be sufficient to secure a spot as one of the best third-place finishers given the extent of its -6 goal difference. However, three points may yet end up being enough for one of these teams to go through if they can win by a wide enough margin in Toronto.
Senegal will be without veteran goalkeeper Edouard Mendy after the ex-Chelsea stopper came off during Monday’s 3-2 defeat to Norway with a knee injury. That should leave Le Havre’s Mory Diaw to step in between the posts, while Kalidou Koulibaly is under pressure to lead his team with more finesse after the center-back had a game to forget against the Vikings.
Iraq succumbed 3-0 against France last time out in a match that sprang few surprises outside the match delay caused by extreme weather conditions. Former Manchester United prospect Zidane Iqbal will hope to keep his place in midfield after being promoted from the bench, while Ali Al-Hamadi will hope to reclaim his spot in attack having been dropped for the loss against France.
