One of baseball’s oldest and fiercest rivalries renews on Friday night when the Boston Red Sox (26-35) open a three-game series with the New York Yankees (37-25) at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

New York learned on Friday it will be without slugging right fielder Aaron Judge for the foreseeable future after he was diagnosed with a stress fracture in a rib while salvaging the finale of their three-game series with the visiting Cleveland Guardians with a 2-1 victory. Ryan McMahon drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the seventh inning. Carlos Rodón gave up a run on two hits in six innings, striking out seven, but did not figure in the decision, while three relievers threw three no-hit innings to close it out.

The Red Sox closed out a 3-3 homestand with an 8-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday, with a six-run first inning setting up Baltimore to cruise to the win. Willson Contreras drove in both runs for Boston with a sixth-inning single and a solo home run in the ninth, while Brayan Bello surrendered all eight runs over five innings of work and is reportedly set to be optioned to Triple-A Worcester after falling to 2-6 with a 6.34 ERA in 12 outings.
The Yankees will give the ball to left-hander Ryan Weathers (2-3) to open the series. He enters with a 3.52 ERA and 1.141 WHIP In 11 starts and 64 innings while striking out 75. Boston goes with right-hander Sonny Gray (6-1), who has a 3.06 ERA and 1.200 WHIP in 10 starts and 50 innings.
