The Cavaliers and Pistons return to Rocket Arena on Friday night for a massive Game 6 with Cleveland holding a 3-2 series lead after one of the wildest finishes of the NBA postseason so far.

Cleveland stole Game 5 in Detroit with a 117-113 overtime win after rallying from a nine-point deficit late in regulation. Donovan Mitchell finished with 21 points, James Harden added 30 points and eight rebounds, and Evan Mobley nearly posted a triple-double with 19 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. Cade Cunningham was spectacular for Detroit with 39 points and nine assists, but the Pistons could not close the game out after leading for most of the fourth quarter.

The ending of Game 5 immediately became one of the biggest storylines of the playoffs after Detroit players and coaches were furious over a no-call involving Jarrett Allen and Ausar Thompson in the final seconds of regulation. The NBA later backed the officials in its Last Two Minutes Report, ruling the contact incidental, but the controversy has only intensified heading into Friday’s elimination game for Detroit.
Cleveland now has a chance to reach the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2018, and the Cavaliers have looked like a completely different team at home during the postseason. Donovan Mitchell continues to lead the offense, but Cleveland’s size with Mobley and Allen has increasingly worn down Detroit’s frontcourt as the series has progressed. The Cavaliers have also benefited from stronger secondary scoring in recent games, especially from Harden and Max Strus.
Detroit’s confidence, however, should not disappear after one loss. The Pistons won 60 games during the regular season, earned the No. 1 seed in the East, and already completed a 3-1 comeback against Orlando in Round 1. Cunningham has continued to emerge as one of the NBA’s rising postseason stars, and the Pistons’ physical defense has repeatedly frustrated Cleveland when they control tempo and dominate the glass.
