The Netherlands will take on Japan in Group F at the World Cup 2026 on Sunday in what promises to be one of the highlight fixtures of the opening weekend.

Just 11 places separate Japan from the Netherlands in the current FIFA rankings as two teams in firm competition for first place in Group F collide on Sunday. De Oranje are widely considered frontrunners to take top spot in the pool, though the Samurai Blue have proved themselves to be understated threats after making it to the last 16 in each of the past two World Cups.

Hajime Moriyasu’s side has never advanced beyond that point, however, and knows a win at AT&T Stadium this weekend could pave the way to finally breaking that duck. Group F rivals Sweden and Tunisia look like slightly lesser threats on paper, though this pool could end up being among the tightest in the entire tournament.
Both captains in Arlington currently play for Liverpool, with Virgil van Dijk set to exchange niceties with club colleague Wataru Endo prior to kick-off.
