The Anaheim Ducks and Vegas Golden Knights meet Wednesday night in Game 2 of their Western Conference second-round playoff series, with Vegas looking to take a commanding 2-0 lead before the series shifts to Anaheim.

Vegas escaped with a 3-1 win in Game 1 despite being heavily outplayed for long stretches, thanks largely to goaltender Carter Hart and a controversial late sequence that led to Ivan Barbashev’s game-winning goal. Anaheim outshot the Golden Knights 34-22 and used its speed to consistently pressure Vegas in transition, but the Ducks were unable to capitalize on four power-play opportunities after going 8-for-16 on the man advantage in their first-round series against Edmonton.

The Ducks still have plenty of confidence entering Game 2 after eliminating the Oilers for their first playoff series victory since 2017. Young stars like Leo Carlsson, Cutter Gauthier, and Beckett Sennecke continue to drive Anaheim’s offense, while defenseman Jackson LaCombe has emerged as one of the breakout players of the postseason with 10 playoff points in seven games. Anaheim head coach Joel Quenneville said he liked much of his team’s pace and pressure in Game 1, though the Ducks will need more net-front traffic against Hart after many of their shots came from the perimeter.
Vegas, meanwhile, knows it must clean things up despite stealing the opener. Coach John Tortorella openly admitted the Golden Knights “were not good” in Game 1, with Anaheim dictating much of the tempo. Still, Vegas showed why its playoff experience matters, capitalizing on key mistakes and getting another strong performance from Mitch Marner, who finished with a goal and an assist. The Golden Knights’ penalty kill has also been elite this postseason, killing 19 of 20 penalties through the first two rounds. Historically, teams that grab a 2-0 lead in a best-of-seven NHL playoff series go on to win the series more than 86 percent of the time, making Wednesday’s matchup pivotal for both sides.
