The sudden and shocking retirement of Chicago Bears center Drew Dalman is going to have a significant impact not only on the front office as they look to reshuffle the offensive line but potentially also on quarterback Caleb Williams and the steps he made in his second year.
Earning the nickname "Iceman" for his cool, calm, and epic comebacks throughout the entire 2025 season, the relationship that Williams built with Dalman and his entire offensive line was key to their turnaround success.
Following the news of Dalman's retirement, many have weighed in on what it could mean for Chicago moving forward, including former NFL quarterback and current analyst, Chase Daniel. Having spent two seasons with the Bears, Daniel has often used his platform to discuss Williams and Chicago, and he believes that the impact of Dalman's retirement could be a significant loss.
"Well, it's a huge deal," Daniel said on ESPN's NFL Live. "For one, he's the center, he's the guy who snaps you the football," Daniel told ESPN. "Ultimately at the line of scrimmage, when you watch the film, Drew Dalman was calling all the protections. Whether it's the run game protection or the pass game protection and it was really key in Caleb Williams' development. I was in awe, I was completely flabbergasted and surprised. When you're a quarterback, you have a certain comfort level with certain centers, how they see things, what we should go to, it just puts a little bit more on Caleb Williams' plate. He's the leader of the big uglies up front, this is a massive, massive loss."
The Bears have already moved quickly to try and find a replacement for Dalman, having brought former Washington Commanders center Tyler Biadasz in for a visit as the front office shifts their focus to changing up their offensive line. There are now questions about what the team will do at both center and left tackle, and they'll have to make sure to identify the best fit at center for someone who can continue progressing the development of their young quarterback.
