On Tuesday night, the Milwaukee Brewers regained first place in the National League Central Division with a 5-2 win over the Chicago Cubs.

The victory also secures the series for the Brewers in the three-game set, and they will have a chance to sweep the Cubs on Wednesday. How did they make it happen?

The Miz

In his 10th start of the season, Brewers right-hander Jacob Misiorowski put his growing stardom on full display yet again.

Misiorowski was a dominant force through six shutout innings of work; striking out eight batters and allowing just three hits and one walk. He threw 74 pitches in the outing, 44 of which found the strike zone according to his Baseball Savant profile.

As usual, Misiorowski relied on his four-seam fastball (42 pitches) and went to his slider as his secondary pitch (25 pitches). His top velocity during the evening reached 101.5 mph, and he kept Chicago’s hitters flummoxed.

Misiorowski’s effort got him the winning decision and improved him to 4-2 on the year.

Turang and Bauers

On the offensive end, the Brewers did not need a lot to win the game, but Brice Turang and Jake Bauers provided a big spark anyway.

Turang led the offensive charge with three hits in four at-bats, all of which were highlighted by a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to make it a 5-0 game.

A night after notching a team-high four RBIs and hitting a home run of his own, Bauers showed up yet again with two hits in five at-bats and another RBI in his contributions on Tuesday.

Bullpen Brings it Home

After Brewers manager Pat Murphy relied on just two pitchers to get Milwaukee through the series-opener against the Cubs, he decided to go deep into his bullpen in the second game.

After Misiorowski’s evening was over, Murphy called on four relievers to close the game: Trevor Megill, Aaron Ashby, Chad Patrick and Abner Uribe.

The bullpen combined for five strikeouts, and the only pitcher of the four that struggled on the mound was Ashby, who allowed four hits, two earned runs and a walk in his brief appearance. Otherwise, the Brewers' backup arms were spotless and helped them achieve another critical victory over their division rivals.

Tuesday’s victory marks a rapid turnaround by Milwaukee after it started the season leading the National League Central before injuries and losing streaks began taking a toll. Now, the Brewers have sent a message to the Cubs, who sat comfortably in first place not long ago.
