Things could be changing along the offensive line for the 49ers, and it's not just the faces in the trenches.
Those might be changing a little bit, too, as reports on Monday indicated that San Francisco is signing Robert Jones. Jones enters his sixth NFL season and has appeared in 49 games, including 30 starts, all 17 of which were with the Dolphins in 2024. He signed with Dallas in 2025 but missed the past year due to a neck injury before re-entering the free agency market.
But one interesting thing about the Jones signing is exactly how he fits into the 49ers' offense, and what a player like him being brought aboard might mean for the San Francisco scheme on that side of the ball. The bread and butter of San Francisco's rushing attack is based on a zone-blocking scheme. However, Jones has thrived the most during his time in the NFL as a power blocker.
Of course, this could mean absolutely nothing in terms of the future of the 49ers' offense. But it could also mean the offense is shifting towards a more power-based rushing attack that attacks gaps rather than zones — and there are reasons to believe it might work out well for San Francisco.
But regardless of how the offensive scheme looks in the future, Jones adds a ton of depth to the offensive line unit for the 49ers. He'll bring 2,025 career snaps at the NFL level to San Francisco and multiple seasons of starting experience. And that can only be a good thing for the franchise moving forward.

Robert Jones signing is fascinating because he’s been best as a power blocker.
Might the 49ers continue sprinkling in more gap concepts? Zone is SF’s pillar, but worth considering especially after performances like the Atlanta game in 2025.
Also, Jones was a plus-pass… pic.twitter.com/43zkXLzLni
