The newest Colorado Avalanche trade pickup has a name that sounds very familiar.

Nicolas Roy, acquired on Thursday from the Toronto Maple Leafs, brings a last name to town that was made famous in goal by the legendary Patrick Roy.

No, Nicolas isn't a goalie.

But yeah, there's a connection here.

Is Nicolas Roy related to Patrick Roy?​


Yes, Nicolas Roy and Patrick Roy are related.

They're father and son. Patrick, the Hall of Fame goalie, is Nicolas' dad.

Nicolas ended up as a forward instead. Probably better not to follow in those legendary goaltending footsteps.

How did Avalanche get Nicolas Roy?​


Less than a year ago, Roy was a member of the Vegas Golden Knights.

When Vegas got Mitch Marner in a sign-and-trade from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Roy was sent the other way as return compensation.

Roy, though, struggled in Toronto, with just five goals and 15 assists so far this season. He was made expendable.

When the Avalanche offered a first-round pick to Toronto, the Leafs took it.

So now Roy gets to go to Colorado, where his dad played for nearly a decade.
