Matthew Stafford has turned his MVP season into another massive Los Angeles Rams payday.
The Rams have decided that their championship window still belongs to Stafford, even as they start planning for the future behind him.
After a season in which he played at a level few quarterbacks of any age could match, Los Angeles chose stability, production, and one more serious Super Bowl push over uncertainty.

Adam Schefter reveals Matthew Stafford’s Los Angeles Rams extension after NFL MVP season
Adam Schefter reported that Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams have agreed to a major one-year extension.
Schefter wrote, “Reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford and the Rams reached an agreement today on a one-year, $55 million extension worth up to $60 million with incentives.
“Stafford now has two years and up to $105 million remaining on his deal with the Rams,” he added.
The structure keeps Stafford tied to Los Angeles through the 2027 season, while giving the Rams a clear short-term plan at the most important position.
The money also reflects how rare Stafford’s 2025 season was. At 37, he won his first NFL MVP after leading the league with 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdowns.

The Rams’ decision makes sense because Stafford’s form gave them very little reason to step away from the veteran quarterback timeline. He threw only eight interceptions during his MVP campaign, posted a 109.2 passer rating, and helped Los Angeles reach the NFC Championship Game.
That kind of efficiency, paired with Sean McVay’s offense and weapons such as Puka Nacua, gives the Rams a realistic path to compete immediately.
The extension also avoids forcing a rushed succession plan. Los Angeles drafted Ty Simpson in the first round, but the new deal allows him to develop behind Stafford instead of being thrown into the job before the roster is ready for that transition.
There is still risk because Stafford will be 38 during the new season, and quarterback decline can arrive quickly when age and contact start adding up.
Even so, the Rams are paying for the version of Stafford they just watched, not only the name on his résumé. Based on his MVP form, the deal looks like the right call for a team still built to chase another Super Bowl.
