How many years after retirement can a cricketer become India's chief selector?
A former Indian cricketer will be eligible to apply for the post of chief selector in India after five years of retirement from all formats of cricket.
According to the eligibility criterion by the BCCI for the Men's Senior Selection Committee, it says, "An applicant must have retired from the game at least 5 years prior."
Thus, after retirement, the player is not allowed to directly come into the system of selectors. This helps in creating a gap between his playing career and selection committee membership.
For instance, if a cricketer retires in 2026, he will be eligible to join the senior men's selection committee only from 2031.

Official BCCI rules for becoming India's chief selector
The BCCI's criteria for the Senior Men's Selection Committee include the following requirements:
Minimum playing experience
Should have played a minimum of:
- 7 (Seven) Test matches, OR
- 30 (Thirty) First Class Matches; OR
- 10 (Ten) One Day International Matches and 20 (Twenty) First Class matches.
Five-year retirement requirement
The candidate must have retired from all formats of cricket at least five years before applying for the position.
Restriction on previous BCCI cricket committee roles
No person who has been a member of any Cricket Committee (as defined in the Memorandum of Association and Rules and Regulations of BCCI) for a total of five years shall be eligible to be a member of Men’s Selection Committee.

Appointment of the chief selector
The position of the chief selector is not an independently appointed position. BCCI selects members of the Men’s Senior Selection Committee, while the chairman of the committee is chosen from among its members.
This committee, headed by the chief selector, selects the senior men’s teams of India for representation in Tests, ODIs, T20Is and any other format.
Why does the BCCI have a five-year gap rule?
The five-year waiting period is perturbed to ensures that there is a degree of separation between the player's career and his duties as a selector.
A player who used to play for the national team before might have been a teammate of the present crop of players, thereby complicating his role of being a selector right away.

Former India all-rounder Ajit Agarkar is the chairman of the BCCI Men’s Senior Selection Committee since July 2023, with his contract reportedly extended by the BCCI for a period of one year, which means that his role as the head selector will continue till September 2027.
Continuity before the 2027 ODI World Cup is understood as one of the reasons for his contract extension.
Some of the difficult decisions made during Agarkar's term have included retiring Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Tests and reducing senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami from international cricket.
Another decision made by him was regarding selecting the form player Ishan Kishan over the Test and ODI skipper Shubman Gill in the T20 World Cup squad.
