The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina will bring together athletes from around the world to compete on ice and snow. Fans will see fast races, high jumps, and skill-based events across different venues. This edition of the Games will include eight sports and 16 disciplines, split between indoor ice rinks and outdoor mountain courses, including a brand new discipline making its Olympic debut, adding something fresh to the program.
Below is a clear breakdown of every sport and discipline that is being featured at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Biathlon combines two different skills. Athletes ski across snow courses and stop to shoot rifles at targets. Speed and accuracy both matter. This sport is part of the Nordic events. All races take place outdoors on snow tracks.
Bobsleigh is part of the sledding events. Racers go down narrow ice tracks at very high speed. Athletes must steer through sharp turns while staying balanced. All races are held on outdoor ice courses.

Curling is played on indoor ice rinks. Players slide heavy stones toward a target circle. Teammates sweep the ice to guide the stone’s path. Matches are decided by tactics and teamwork rather than speed.

Ice hockey is one of the oldest Winter Olympic sports. It made its Olympic debut at the 1920 Summer Games. Teams skate on indoor rinks and score by hitting a puck into the net. The sport is fast and physical.

Luge is another sledding sport run on ice tracks. Competitors lie on their backs and race feet first. Small movements help control direction. Precision is needed due to steep slopes and tight curves.
Skating events take place indoors on ice. Athletes compete in artistic routines and speed races. Short track events are run on smaller tracks with tight corners and close racing.

Ski mountaineering will appear for the first time at the 2026 Games. Athletes climb slopes using skis with special sticky skins underneath. Steeper sections require them to carry their skis. After reaching the top, the skins are removed and racers ski downhill. Events take place on snow and in open mountain areas.
Skiing includes the largest number of disciplines. Alpine races are held on steep slopes with gates and sharp turns. Cross-country skiing tests stamina over long distances. Ski jumping sends athletes off ramps for long flights. Nordic combined mixes ski jumping and cross country skiing. Freestyle skiing adds aerial tricks and park events. Snowboarding features jumps, races, and technical courses.
