Jordan Lessard’s eyes were wide open on the drive north from the airport to Fort Collins.

“I thought it was beautiful,” Lessard said. “Seeing the mountains all on the left side was amazing.”

It was early January and Lessard immediately knew where his future would be.

“I was ready to lock it down right away. I loved the vibe, I loved the culture,” Lessard said. “Coach (Jim) Mora was running things well. I was excited to get it locked down.”

Normal recruiting visit, right?

In a way, yes. But no.

Lessard wasn’t visiting the Colorado State football facilities and new coach as a high school prospect, nor your traditional transfer.

He was coming in from Quebec, Canada.

Lessard joins CSU as a transfer from Laval University in Quebec.

This is his goal. This is his dream.

“I knew what American football brought and I knew that’s where I wanted to be and I knew I had the qualities to be here, so I did everything in my power to be here,” Lessard said.

Lessard actually spoke with Mora when the new CSU coach was at UConn and Lessard was coming out of high school. But Lessard needed more experience and more film as he grew his game.

That’s because, yeah, there are differences between the game in Canada and what Lessard will face as a Ram where he will try and make an impact as a cornerback.

“I think the main ones are the fact that there’s 12 players on the field in Canadian football, the field’s way bigger and obviously just the quality of football here is unmatched. The players that I’m playing with here I’ve never played with in Canada,” Lessard said.

He immediately noticed the rise in level, citing another transfer as one of the ways he’s growing his game at CSU.

“There’s some good football players there, but lining up against receivers like Jordan Mosley, who comes from Mississippi State and played in the SEC, is just a game-changer for me,” Lessard said.

Lessard was listed as 6-foot-2 on Laval’s roster (CSU doesn’t list heights and weights) and hopes to bring his strengths to CSU.

“I’m a long corner. I’m tall, I’m big. I bring a lot of physicality,” Lessard said. “I think I can run with anyone on the field and I’m somebody that likes to be up in people’s faces and press more.”

He enjoyed Sonny Lubick’s Steakhouse on his recruiting visit and appreciates some of the more unique American things he’s found, like Jimmy John’s. Lessard is roommates with another transfer, Elijah Mc-Cantos from Appalachian State, and says many in the defensive backs group have helped his adjustment to Fort Collins.

“It’s been sick. It’s what I expected,” Lessard said. “I knew it was going to be hard, we get worked pretty hard here. It’s fun. I love it.”
