The Seattle Seahawks won their first Super Bowl behind the "Legion of Boom," a fast and physical defense led by defensive backs Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor and Richard Sherman. Seattle is once again hoping to ride its defense to a championship, only this time the unit has adopted a different name.
Now, Seattle is calling its defense the "Dark Side," and it has a variety of meanings. First off, defensive end Leonard Williams says the Seahawks' defense has earned a new nickname and it wanted to differentiate itself from the Legion of Boom. Fellow edge rusher DeMarcus Lawrence says the name signifies their unit cutting the lights off the opposing offense, as if darkness itself was a 12th defender on the field. Also, Seattle's notoriously gloomy weather factored into the decision.
Safety Julian Love describes the Dark Side as a group of complementary football players who are unafraid to lay the smackdown.
"I think of just killers," Love said of the Dark Side. "I think we just have hunters on all three levels of the ball. Guys who fill in the depth of our defense as well, we have playmakers across the board. Nobody has to do anything extra for themselves, you've just got to make the plays that come to you. That's the Dark Side."
Seattle has earned the right to use whatever nickname it likes. Mike MacDonald's group earned the No. 1 seed in the NFC, ranks No. 1 in total DVOA and the defense has allowed a league-low 17.2 points per game this season.
