Where did Iowa women’s basketball's star guard Chit-Chat Wright get her nickname?

Thanks to ESPN’s Holly Rowe, we have the answer. Around the age of 10, the Georgia Tech transfer was quiet on her very first AAU team. A set of teammates gave her a nickname that was the opposite of her quiet personality.

Thus, the name “Chit-Chat” was born ... and has stuck.

“I am more talkative now,” the Georgia Tech transfer said on April 23, 2025, the day she committed to Iowa, in an interview with the Des Moines Register. “Yes, that’s a fact.”

“Chit-Chat” is now what she is known as on first reference and how she is introduced at games. People will hear that name plenty as Wright and the 2-seed Hawkeyes take on 15-seed FDU on Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in the opening round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament.
