Following three days of minicamp practices, let's put together a revised projection of what the Indianapolis Colts' depth chart looks like for the defense.
As we mentioned when breaking down each positional depth chart on offense, what takes place in minicamp won't solely determine playing time and final roster decisions. Ultimatley, training camp and the preseason will carry the most weight.
That said, minicamp is a piece of that puzzle, and during these practices, there are players who stand out. The foundation for training camp is laid during the offseason programs.
So with that in mind, here is an early guess on where things stand on defense.
One of the most important positional battles taking place is for the starting role opposite of Latu. For now, I'll have Key ahead of Tuimoloau because of his experience.
How the depth chart shakes out after Buckner and Stewart remains to be seen. Wooden brings a versatile skill set to the defensive front. Adebawore and Tillery have seen more pass rush snaps, while Nnadi is a run-stuffer. Playing time could be dependent on the matchup and in-game situations.
As the Colts search for answers at linebacker, they rotated often during minicamp in search of their best starting configuration. Allen, Davis-Gaither, Boettcher, and Carlies all saw opportunities with the ones. The Colts are also bullish on UDFAs Weeks and Chambers.
We know who the top three spots on the depth chart belong to, but after that, there will be heavy competition this summer to see how the rest of the depth chart shakes out. Edwards had a strong minicamp, while Blackmon played nearly 800 snaps last season. Taylor-Britt has experience in Anarumo's defense, while Mitchell performed well when called upon last season. Jones' role was smaller last season.
Haulcy appears to be the favorite for the starting role next to Cam Bynum. Owens, Wohler, and Thomas could end up competing for the third safety role, which may see some playing time in defensive back-heavy formations.
