Deandre Ayton says he is not Clint Capela

Speaking to ESPN, Deandre Ayton said: “They’re trying to make me Clint Capela. I’m not no Clint Capela!”

The remark appeared to reference the perception that Ayton could be deployed primarily as a rim-running, pick-and-roll finisher alongside elite playmakers.

Capela built his reputation thriving in that exact role, particularly next to high-level ball handlers.

Clint Capela fires back on social media

Clint Capela responded via his Instagram story, later shared by TheHoopCentral, writing: “You got two of the best floor generals in the game, my dawg lock in [laughing emojis].”

The comment referenced Luka Doncic and LeBron James, two of the NBA’s premier facilitators. Capela’s message implied that playing a defined role next to elite creators is an opportunity rather than a limitation.

Throughout his career, Capela has excelled as a screen setter, lob threat, and defensive anchor. His success alongside playmakers has often translated into efficient production and playoff impact.

The exchange adds intrigue to how Ayton will embrace his responsibilities in Los Angeles. Whether he views the comparison as a slight or a blueprint remains to be seen.
