The Indianapolis Colts have several rookies who could earn playing time and see playing time this season.
So what does head coach Shane Steichen need to see from these rookies to give them more reps?
Of course, they need to perform well, but accomplishing that begins with knowing the playbook in great detail and what's expected of them on a given play.
"I think it's understanding the playbook," Steichen said on Tuesday. "I think that's a big part of it. Fundamentals and details are a big part of it. You got to know what to do. Obviously as a rookie going out there, there's a lot of things, a lot of moving parts. They got to understand our systems and how we operate within the systems to be out there to go make plays because if you don't know what to do, it's going to be hard to go make plays."
CJ Allen is expected to start at MIKE linebacker for the Colts, while AJ Haulcy, Bryce Boettcher, Jalen Farmer, and Dieon Burks could all compete for snaps at their respective position groups.
Even UDFAs like linebackers West Weeks and Tahj Chambers, who the Colts are quite bullish on, could find themselves in the mix and competing for special teams reps.
That is why this time of the year, when OTAs and minicamp take place, is so important. The pads may not be on yet, which can hinder the on-field evaluation, but the offensive and defensive schemes are being implemented, and the foundation of those systems is being established.
