BOSTON — The Charlotte Hornets proved their recent winning ways weren't a fluke on Wednesday evening, as they crushed the Boston Celtics 118-89 at TD Garden, marking their first win in Beantown in over four years. This upset came on the second night of a back-to-back for the Hornets, who have now won six games in a row, which is enough for the longest active winning streak in the NBA.
While the Celtics hung around at times with the young Hornets, they couldn't maintain much momentum. The frustrating defeat was just Boston's second wire-to-wire loss of the entire season. Celtics guard Derrick White led the team in scoring with 29 points while five-time All-Star Jaylen Brown tacked on 20 points and 11 rebounds. No other Celtic was even in double digits.
As for the Hornets, rookie Kon Knueppel recorded 20 points in 31 minutes while shooting 50% from the field. Third-year Hornet Brandon Miller added 18 points, 5 rebounds, and a few ferocious dunks in just 27 minutes of play.
After getting scorched by one Rookie of the Year candidate in Knueppel, the Celtics may face another on Friday night when Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks come to town. While the 19-year-old hasn't played since Feb. 10 due to a left midfoot sprain, he could return at TD Garden for a sort of homecoming, as the New England native was born in Maine and grew up a Celtics fan.
The Boston faithful won't just be watching the injury report for Flagg, though. Celtics star Jayson Tatum has ramped up his recovery from an Achilles rupture and could suit up for the Green Team again before the end of the 2025-26 regular season.
