CHERRY RIDGE — KC Pepper provided the backdrop this week as Wayne County prepares to transition from fall to winter on the high school sports scene.
The Honesdale Area Jaycees played host at the popular restaurant Monday, Nov. 11, welcoming representatives from five local schools that will compete in the 65th annual Holiday Basketball Tournament.
This year’s edition of the event will be held on Friday, December 26 and Saturday, December 27, at Honesdale. Boys games will be played in the Wayne Highlands Middle School gym, while girls games are slated for the high school.

“The Jaycees are excited to be gearing up for another basketball tournament,” said current president Stephanie Schuman. “We always enjoy hosting the coaches' dinner and we’re thankful to all the schools for participating.”
The 2025 tourney will feature Honesdale, Wallenpaupack Area, Western Wayne and East Stroudsburg South in the boys bracket.
Meanwhile, the Hornets, Bucks and Wildcats will be joined by Forest City in the girls division.
Action gets underway that Friday night with Paupack and Western Wayne tipping off for the initial girls game at 5:45 p.m. Next up will be Forest City versus Honesdale, starting at about 7:15 p.m.
Boys action commences at 6:30 p.m. with Paupack battling East Stroudsburg South. The Day One nightcap features Honesdale against Western Wayne at approximately 8 p.m.
Consolation contests and championship games will take place on Saturday starting at 5:45 p.m. for the girls and 6:30 p.m. for the boys.
“Please come out to support our teams as they compete for the coveted title,” said tournament co-chair Julia Parlier. “We truly appreciate the community’s support of our event each year. We would not be able to do what we do without them.”
The Jaycees hosted their first basketball tournament in 1960. It is one of the oldest holiday athletic events in the state.
In the beginning, this was a boys-only tourney. Paupack won the first two titles thanks in large part to the talents of local legend Mike Strong.
Waymart then established a mini dynasty by capturing the next four championships. The Warriors were coached by Hall of Famer Pat “Red” Walsh.
Damascus won its only title in 1966, followed by St. Paul's of Scranton, Paupack (twice), Mountain View and Elk Lake.
It wasn't until 1972, more than a decade after the tournament was inaugurated, that the host team copped its first crown. The Hornets went on a tear after that. The Red & Black have assembled five-year and four-year winning streaks.
Honesdale holds the all-time mark for boys Jaycees titles with 18. Paupack, which copped the crown last winter, is a close second with 16.
The girls bracket didn't come into existence until 1985. Honesdale won that initial event and 10 of the first 12.
The Hornets are the reigning girls champion and have won the most titles with 18. Paupack is second with 13.
