Cardinals | Progress With Holliday - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
5:08 PT: PackersNews.com reports agent Brian Levy said he has made considerable progress in negotiations with the Arizona Cardinals on a contract for free agent DE Vonnie Holliday (Packers) over the past couple days, though other teams, including Seattle and Philadelphia, could enter the picture if Holliday doesn’t reach agreement with the Cardinals soon. "Our numbers haven’t scared them off," Levy said, "and they’ve been fair about trying to get a long-term deal."

Is anyone excited about this..I am not. Although he is better than what we have - he will burn up our cap space and he is not a pass rusher (and his health is a big question mark). If we sign him..I would speculate the plan would be to rotate holliday and dennis johnson.. or move holliday inside on passing downs to replace tanner..

by the way..someone mentioned tanner is a bad run stuffer - but I could not find the thread..I disagree - we were decent against the run last season until he was injured...then we he came back things were going downhill so bad we never recovered. I think tanner is decent against the run - but has 0 pass rushing ability..

I am.

He's flat out better than any DE on our roster (including VDB - who's not there yet).

He's not the edge-guy we all wanted, but he's an all purpose DE who can rush the passer and stop the run. He figures to anchor the left side better than anyone we've had with the exception of Wadsworth's 2 or 3 good games and maybe Clyde Simmons (if in fact he played on the left side. Did he?)

He makes our D-Line better. No one out there in free agency - with perhaps the exception of Hugh Douglas - could have helped us more.

More on our DE's:

1. I love Wakefield. But the harsh reality is that last year, he continually got trapped inside on wide runs and waggles to his side, and he never learned to disengage from blockers. Maybe this is Mean Joe's fault - but, truth be told, Freddie wasn't getting it done. Maybe Holliday becomes our "real" DE coach and teaches our DE's techniques Mean Joe isn't teaching.

2. VDB is the heart and soul of the defense. But he didn't step up and deliver all that often last season. Probably it's the knee (It's said you need 2 years to come all the way back). VDB also has trouble getting sucked in on wide plays and staying off blocks. His strength is that he's relentless.

3. Dennis Johnson displayed more flashes of "that's what I'm talkin' about" than either Fred or VDB. IF he's been working his butt off to get stronger in the offseason, he may turn out to be our edge guy.

4. And there's always the draft (Suggs, Dewayne White, maybe even McDougal if we trade down).

A DE rotation of Holiday, Johnson, Vanden Bosh, Wakefield, Moore - and the possible addition of Suggs in the draft - going into camp is a damn sight better than we've had in the recent past....

This is awesome, but now we have to hope against hope that Bryant, Bell, and Tanner can step up their games. Who do we have at DT behind them, anyway?

I am not excited about Holliday but I am not disappointed either. He wasn't the player I wanted but he is better than what the Cards have right now.

I cannot see the Cards getting a shot at Suggs...without trading up which they better not do. I would like to see them snag Cory Redding and add him to the DE rotation.

I generally like the idea of signing Holliday. As Jeff said, I think he is the most protypical LE. Signing him would indeed make for a nice rotation, I think.
That would give 4 guys that could actually all see considerable playing time, thus keeping them all fresher and making the defense stronger in the latter stages of games.
I think it also adds versatility in that I would see Holliday strictly as LE with Wakefield splitting time there or at DE in some situations...eg obvious passing downs. KVB and DJ sharing time at RE and maybe even either or both sometimes on the left.
Having the other 3 guys also enables the Cards to take the risk on Holliday's health a little more.
yeah....I think he would be a good addition to the team.
Get him signed.

If he is better than what we have why would you not sign him. Seems like a no brainer to me. We are not broke and he is not going to make us go broke. Is there a credable better option out there without making some wild speculation.

He may not be the best pass rusher in the NFL but come one guys. We need an upgrade at he DL soooo badly any upgrade is a good one...

I like Holliday alot I prefer a balanced player over a one dementional one anytime...

Holliday and Bryant could both rotate from DT/DE from time to time...

Holliday also gives us options in the draft if we go SUGGS Holliday could play DT or if we get that big DT He can play DE...

I love the move PLZ get it done...

Then all we need is a Good vet WR...

If we get Holliday then I say draft Newman. It will serve two needs return man and corner. (solid dline, good LB's and a sweeeeet secondary). And we would still be pretty young.
