On the day Liverpool look likely to equal their record of 20 top flight titles Manchester United could only manage a draw with Bournemouth, despite playing against 10 men for the final quarter of the game. This was another late rescue act, although Rasmus Hojlund’s equaliser was more of a face-saving exercise than the heroics against Lyon two weeks ago. There was no outpouring of emotion to match the mood of Old Trafford then, just a sense that things could have been a lot worse.

Hojlund’s goal came at the end of sustained pressure in nine minutes of injury time but still felt harsh on Bournemouth. They dominated much of the game and responded well to Evanilson’s yellow card being upgraded to a red by VAR. His tackle on Noussair Mazraoui was reckless but unfortunate, not helped by slipping on his final approach.

United looked a fatal combination of unable and unwilling to cope with Bournemouth at the beginning of the match. Andoni Iraola’s side moved up the gears from the kick off, United could not even start their engine. The storm looked weathered when Alejandro Garnacho, a rare bright spot, dragged a shot just wide after quarter of an hour but 10 minutes later Bournemouth were ahead.

It was a familiar comedy of errors at the back for Ruben Amorim’s team. Shortly after his own team took a free kick Patrick Dorgu slipped in possession on the touchline. The ball reached the box where Casemiro over-committed, making space for Antoine Semenyo to finish Evanilson’s first-time pass with relish.

United were hardly overwhelmed. Bournemouth needed to operate at their diligent best to establish superiority. But there were few indications that Amorim’s side were capable of matching that intensity. The well-known systemic failures were evident in the ease with which Bournemouth made mischief in wide positions. United’s back three were relatively steady but offered little protection by the wing-backs, particularly Dorgu.

Casemiro looked overwhelmed at 33 in the young man’s game of a Premier League midfield. No heroic rescue act either from Bruno Fernandes who lashed one late shot into the side netting shortly after some pointed shouting towards his own bench.

But he and his team plugged away credibly to rescue something , turning the match from embarrassment to neutral. Clearly their attention is on the Europa League and the trip to Bilbao on Thursday but this was still another league low in a season full of them. Bournemouth’s attention is on the same competition, but they might still make it in via their domestic finish. Play like they did for much of this game and they will give themselves a chance.

The thoughts of Bruno Fernandes

“It was very important not to lose the game today. We are not at the best level in the Premier League, so we needed to get something. It is not the result we wanted, but we had to push a little to get something. We did enough to at least score one goal. We created enough chances to score more than one goal, but it is still not enough from us.

“We need to be have more anger than the defenders to get the ball. To get [the ball] first, you need to be focused in everything you do in training. That is what we have to do from now on. We should have done it already and we have been doing it in training, but you need to do it in games.

“Sometimes you get one chance and you score a goal, and sometimes you get 10 or 15 chances and do not score. With the team we have, we need to get more bodies in the box, create more danger, be more active in the box, and outside the box be much more brave to take our chances.”

On Rasmus Hojlund:

“He knows how much he needs to score goals at this club. If you want to be at a big club like Manchester United, you need to improve every time you step onto the pitch, but it is not only up to him.

“Expectations on him are very high, and he has to deal with that. When he does not score, he has to focus on what he needs to do a little bit differently to score.”

On parallels between Athletic Bilbao and Bournemouth:

“Both teams are very intense with very quick wingers who are very good in one-v-ones. We have time now to try and focus on what Athletic Bilbao are going to do, but we have to focus on what we’re going to do.”

Ruben Amorim speaking to the BBC

“I think [we deserved it]. In the first half we suffered with their high-intensity press, but we created chances. We had quite similar chances near the box with a lot of shots. I think we deserved at least one point if you look at the game.

“If you look at our last games, it is always like this – we do something to help the opponent get an advantage. Then it is really hard to score goals, but the players did really well to get at least one point.

“We have the ability to push our opponents. There are small things I think we can do better. We need to understand these moments better, but if you look at the 20 minutes [after Evanilson’s red card], we had situations to score, which is really important.”

On Luke Shaw’s first league start since last year:

“It is really important. Of course we need to be careful with his availability. [After the red card], he was the guy to overload that side. He has quality in the last third, he has a good pass.”

On boosting morale ahead of Thursday’s Europa League semi-final first leg:

“We have lost two points. We did not win, but it does not matter. It is a different competition.”

04:36 PM BST

Andoni Iraola talking to Sky

“It is very frustrating, This win would have meant a lot to us. A point is a big difference.”

On the red card:

“Common sense. Everyone who has played football understands. He slips. He does not catch him with the leg that goes high and the consequence is a red card. It is another three games without playing. The repercussions for us are huge.

“Of course we are going to appeal. It is common sense. In the first half Evanilson gets a kick in the chest by Casemiro. I do not think you should have a red card for this. But the VAR cuts the worst angle, the worst frame.”

On suggestions the VAR did not tell the referee that Evanilson slipped:

“If you are telling me that then it is something very, very serious. It is difficult for us.”

On race for Europe:

“We are in a worse position than the start of the weekend but we still have four games to play. Difficult games but we are in the fight.

“It is difficult to look in a positive way at the moment. We need a few hours.”

04:32 PM BST

Alex Scott speaking to PLP

“We worked so hard throughout the whole game. We played really well, especially in the first half. It is obviously unfortunate with the red card.

“Then you have got to dig in. It is tough against a Manchester United team who have not had the best of seasons, but they are still Man United. It is a bit of a dagger to concede the goal at the end.

“We gave everything in that game. We maybe did not create enough chances, which is something we have lacked a bit recently. To concede after nine minutes were added on, I do not know where nine minutes came from, you have got to take it on the chin.”

Evanilson’s red card:

“I could see on the pitch that he slipped. It looked like the referee did not want to give [the red card], but once he went to the screen we knew he was more likely to give it.”

On Bournemouth’s European hopes:

“The results yesterday did not help. We knew we had to come here and get three points, but we will take the one. We have played well all season, it would be a shame to let it slip in our remaining games.”

04:25 PM BST

The post-match thoughts of Antoine Semenyo

“It is frustrating. We dominated most of the game. We went down to 10 men but I felt we were still quite comfortable. We defended so well. The goal we conceded is so frustrating. It feels a loss, to be honest.

“I feel like there was not much more we could do. All we could do was defend as a group and hope not to concede. We are just unfortunate to concede with the last shot they had.

“The teams above us can lose next week and we can go above them. We just have to go on to next week. We have a tough game [against Arsenal], but the boys will be confident enough going to the Emirates. It is not getting easier, but I have full belief in the team that we can do something.”

On Evanilson’s red card:

“Everyone is just frustrated. There were challenges [like Evanilson’s] all game. It does not make sense as to why that one was a red card.”

04:22 PM BST

Ruben Amorim speaking to Sky

“It was one point. We could do better, we created chances but we need to do better near the box. It is small things. We have to understand the foot that is in play, crossing, one v ones. We need to understand the game in that way.

“Today we pushed our opponent, especially after the sending off. We had the chances but again we did not score.”

On Rasmus Hojlund:

“It is always important for strikers to score. But when we look at the game as a striker it is not just the goals. It is a good boost but the next game is a new history and we have to go again.”

On the next game with Athletic Bilbao:

“The way Bournemouth defend is quite similar to we can take things from this game. But again it is a new history and we must do better.”

On Evanilson’s red card:

“I never comment on red cards, win, lose or draw”.

There is the final whistle and it ends all square courtesy of Hojlund’s late equaliser. Bournemouth will be gutted to drop points, with Fulham and Brighton directly above them both winning yesterday.

GOAL! Hojlund equalises late on for Manchester United

The pressure from the visitors has paid off but was Hojlund offside? He diverted Ugarte’s effort beyond Kepa and the goal is given as he was just onside. He has massively struggled for goals but he has earned the visitors at least a point. Could they even perhaps go on to win the game with the man advantage and the momentum?

Bournemouth are holding on but are edging closer to an important three points for the home side. Four added minutes remain for them to get through.

03:51 PM BST

90+3 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester United 0

The pressure is ramping up on the home side. Manchester United have a series of shots blocked inside the Bournemouth box before the ball comes out to Fernandes outside the box. His first-time effort comes very close to going in but hits the side netting. That was so close that the travelling Manchester United fans thought had gone in.

03:50 PM BST

90+1 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester United 0

Obi has a chance inside the Bournemouth box that nearly beats Kepa at his near post but he tips it over for a corner for the visitors. They take it short and work it to Garnacho, who shoots from a central position just outside the box but his effort is blocked.

03:48 PM BST

90 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester United 0

Due to some VAR checks in this half including the Evanilson red card, there will be nine added minutes.

03:48 PM BST

89 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester United 0

Big chance for Manchester United. Dorgu cuts it back to Mount in the centre of the penalty area. He takes one touch and then tries to curl one into the far corner but Senesi makes a crucial block. Manchester United do win a corner. Fernandes sends a flat delivery to the edge of the box, where Shaw takes it first time but his volley goes wide.

Kepa is fine and that was perhaps more an attempt to run down some time than an actual injury. Not sure you see goalkeepers getting much cramp.

03:44 PM BST

86 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester United 0

Senesi heads behind and Manchester United have a corner out on the right. Fernandes sends it in but he will be so disappointed with his delivery as it is an easy catch for Kepa, who then stays down and needs some treatment.

A third change for Bournemouth as their goalscorer Semenyo comes off to be replaced by Senesi.

The Bournemouth fans are furious. Ouattara drives forward into the Manchester United half and pushes the ball past Ugarte. He is clearly impeded by Ugarte but no foul is given. He probably would not have got on the end of it but it was a foul.

03:40 PM BST

Mount’s eyes light up as the ball comes to him on the edge of the box and he hits it first time but his effort is blocked.

A big 10 minutes or so ahead for Bournemouth as they try and secure European football for next season. The pressure is ramping up from Manchester United as the visitors look to exploit their man advantage.

03:37 PM BST

79 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester United 0

Ouattara looks to counter from just outside his own box and is cynically tripped up by Shaw, who unsurprisingly is shown a yellow card.

03:35 PM BST

77 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester United 0

Shaw sends in another ball from the left that comes across the six-yard box, forcing Huijsen to smash it behind for a corner. Manchester United take it short and Shaw sends in another ball that Bournemouth deal with.

03:34 PM BST

76 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester United 0

Obi nearly gets on the scoresheets within seconds of coming on. Shaw cuts the ball across to him from the left-hand side of the box and he flicks the ball on but it does not have enough power on it and Bournemouth clear.

RED CARD!

Peter Bankes has changed his mind after the review and has sent Evanilson off. Not once in the discussions with VAR did they mention that he slipped. It is certainly not the best of challenges from Evanilson but a red seems a little extreme. Smith has also been booked in the aftermath. Bournemouth will be down to 10 men for the final 20 minutes plus stoppage time.

03:23 PM BST

One of the easiest decisions for Peter Bankes today. Manchester United drive into the Bournemouth half through Dorgu and Kluivert cynically brings him down.

Manchester United are making a triple change as Ugarte, Mount and Lindelof replace Mainoo, Casemiro and Maguire.

The triple sub really should enliven United. Don’t think Maguire had a stinker but the central midfield overhaul was overdue. Ugarte and Fernandes need to establish control, which Mainoo and Casemiro were unable to manage. Mount has looked slightly livelier in recent weeks, if you are feeling optimistic (and have been timewarped here directly from his Chelsea era) you could say he is a good finisher when chances come his way.

03:22 PM BST

64 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester United 0

The ball is played in behind the Bournemouth defence down the left channel and Dorgu hooks it in before reaching the byline. Kepa is forced to tip it over his bar for a corner. Manchester United take it short and then send the ball to the far post, where Maguire heads towards goal but it is straight at Kepa.

03:21 PM BST

Huijsen is booked for the combination of a foul on Hojlund and then stopping the free-kick from being taken quickly, kicking the ball away on two occasions.

03:18 PM BST

60 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester United 0

The post is struck! Ouattara sends in the free-kick and nearly beats Onana at the near post but it comes back off the post. Had that gone in Manchester United would have been enraged. There was a check for handball against Maguire in the aftermath but it is cleared by VAR.

Dorgu is penalised for a foul on Smith not far outside the Manchester United box and receives a yellow card. That is a terrible decision as Dorgu not only got the ball but was arguably then fouled as Smith swung to try and kick the ball. This gives Bournemouth the chance to send the ball into the box and, if they were to score, Manchester United would be furious and justifiably so. Definitely not a foul by Dorgu and certainly not a yellow card.

03:14 PM BST

56 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester United 0

Big chance for the visitors but it would not have counted anyway. Garnacho is played in down the left and he cuts the ball back to Fernandes, whose first-time effort as he opened up his right foot skews well wide. Replays show that Garnacho was offside anyway as the ball was played into him.

03:11 PM BST

53 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester United 0

Bournemouth have a corner out on the left and Onana ends up punching it behind for another corner on the other side. You could audible shouts of ‘Leave it!’ from his teammates but he decided not to take a risk. Kerkez’s delivery is poor and is cleared at the front post by Dorgu.

03:08 PM BST

50 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester United 0

Evanilson is played in down the right channel and has Kluivert shouting at him to pick him out at the back post but Evanilson’s cross is poor and goes into the grateful hands of Onana.

03:07 PM BST

48 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester United 0

Kerkez whips in a dangerous cross from the left trying to pick out Evanilson. Shaw looks like he will clear the ball but he misses it. Fortunately for him the ball also evades Evanilson.

03:05 PM BST

47 mins: Bournemouth 1 Manchester United 0

So close to a second for Semenyo and Bournemouth. After the ball is played in from the left, Kluivert lays it off to Semenyo on the edge of the box. Semenyo takes it on first time but his shot goes whiskers wide of Onana’s right post. He struck it nicely with good whip on it but it just misses the target.

02:53 PM BST

HT verdict

Intriguing game. Really striking how cumbersome United have looked in the face of a much more motivated opponent. Maguire and Shaw have had the odd hairy moment but Casemiro has looked particularly exposed. Goal a comedy of errors, first Dorgu slipping over on the touchline then Casemiro over-committing to free up space for Semenyo’s shot.

But some signs of life before the break. Couple of flashes from Mazraoui and Garnacho, Dorgu making a mild nuisance of himself from some set pieces, Hjolund unlucky not to score, only a brilliant Kepa save denying him.

Bournemouth largely excellent. Commitment everywhere, far keener to win the 50-50s, no messing about with the ball when in positions to hurt United. Can they sustain that level?

02:47 PM BST

Half time

That is it for the first half and Bournemouth lead 1-0 at the break thanks to Semenyo’s goal.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is in attendance at the Vitality Stadium today. On the pitch Evanilson pleads for a free-kick after a collision with Yoro just inside the Manchester United half and, after careful consideration, Peter Bankes decides to eventually give a free-kick, which was probably the right call.

02:41 PM BST

As this half has worn on Manchester United have definitely grown in confidence and you would have to say they are the side in the ascendancy at the moment. A few nerves inside the Vitality Stadium right now.

Semenyo has taken a few risks inside his own box when marking Maguire from corners. He has had his arms around him on a few occasions and some of it is six of one, half a dozen of the other but he would be well advised to be more careful.

Scott sends in a decent ball from the left-hand side of the box but it is slightly too far in front of is teammates and goes behind for a goal-kick.

02:38 PM BST

Manchester United could and perhaps should be level. The ball is played in behind the Bournemouth defence and, for some reason, Zabarnyi lets it bounce and does not deal with it. Garnacho gets on the end of it and tries to lift it over Kepa one-on-one with the Bournemouth keeper but Kepa does well to stretch out his right hand to make the save to deny Garnacho.

Kerkez gets to the byline and his cross is diverted behind for a corner by Mazraoui. Bournemouth take it short but the ball never gets into the box as they go backwards and then to the right before losing possession. What a waste! Just send it into the box!

Evanilson is caught by a high boot from Casemiro and is down in some pain. Whilst on the ground Evanilson pulls his shirt up and shows the stud marks. Bournemouth are not impressed that Casemiro is not severely punished and the Brazilian is not booked.

GOAL! Semenyo fires Bournemouth ahead

The hosts are ahead. Manchester United lose possession deep in their own half as Dorgu is dispossessed by Smith. The ball is sent into the box and Evanilson cleverly flicks the ball into the path of Semenyo, who fires in a shot that beats Onana at his near post. Ruben Amorim will be furious with his side that within 15 seconds of them having a free-kick they conceded a goal. 1-0 Bournemouth.

Adams goes sliding into a challenge on Garnacho on the edge of the Manchester United box. Initially the referee plays on but then stops play and is going to book Adams. It seemed that Peter Bankes may have been swayed by Garnacho rolling around on the ground. It was certainly a forceful challenge and watching the replays it probably merited a yellow card. Initially it seemed a little harsh but a yellow was probably the right call. VAR did check for a possible red card but it stays at a yellow.

Zabarnyi flicks on a free-kick inside the Manchester United box that Huijsen tries to get on the end of but the ball is shielded back to Onana.

Down the other end Garnacho is allowed to get his shot away from the right-hand side of the Bournemouth box and his effort goes whiskers wide of the far post.

It has taken 14 minutes for the United fans to start up their greatest hits chant jukebox, drawing for one of the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer classics. Fairly sure it relates to his playing days rather than the stickier return as manager. That and the weather fits the end of term feel.

Bournemouth started with shock and awe pressing which was making United uncomfortable. Casemiro in particularly looked bewildered in the young man’s game of a Premier League midfield. But the visitors are steadier now, Garnacho’s just wide shot from a tight angle probably the chance of the game so far.

Dorgu fouls Kluivert out on the right, not far outside the Manchester United penalty area, presenting Bournemouth the chance to send a dangerous delivery into the box.

Kerkez, who has such a cultured left foot, sends in a great ball and Ouattara gets his head on his first but he does not get the header right. Shaw, who is playing in the back three for the visitors today, is making his first Manchester United league start since February 2024.

Ouattara plays an unbelievable cross from the left into that corridor of uncertainty between Onana and the last line of the Manchester United defence. Evanilson stretches to try and get on the end of it but it is just out of reach. All he would have needed there was a small touch to divert it goalwards but he could not stretch far enough.

Kluivert sends in a dangerous inswinging ball from the left. Casemiro wins the header but it loops into the air and towards the far post. Semenyo tries to take the ball down but his touch is heavy and it rolls behind for a goal-kick.

We are under way at the Vitality Stadium after Led Zeppelin’s ‘Immigrant Song’ is belted out. That will get the blood pumping for sure.

Live from the sunny south coast

Punchier team than expected for Man Utd, who were expected to rest more players ahead of Thursday night’s trip to Bilbao in the Europa League, now the unlikely real quiz of their season. Starting Fernandes in particular seems a big shout, an injury for him would be fairly disastrous. Some fans were hoping for young Chido Obi to have a run up front in place of Hojlund. No such luck.

Bournemouth’s team are unchanged from their bore draw at Palace and have selected the pre-match music. Someone seems to have gone for an acapella version of We Built This City by Jefferson Starship, which is a nice break from the chart house. I’m guessing Illia Zabarnyi is the culprit. Just gives off Starship vibes.

Daniel Sturridge on Sky

“I had a chat with Sebastian Coates, a former team-mate of mine and a former captain of Ruben Amorim. He said the manager does not want any egos - if you work hard, you play, if you do not work hard, you do not.

“The manager has already said that in the press, but the one thing he did say is things changed when they had a summer and bought eight or nine players.

“He needs players who work within his philosophy, the style of play and identity. But when you go into a football club, and know you are not getting players, is it a bit of stubbornness? This is the worst Man Utd team since I was born. I have never seen them this bad. They show bits in some games, but not enough.”

The pre-match thoughts of Ruben Amorim

On Luke Shaw:

“He is going to start in the back three. That is the best position for him. We have to take a risk there to manage players but to have players like him and Mason Mount improves this team a lot.

On deciding his starting 11:

“I have the responsibility to put a strong team against this Bournemouth side. It will be a tough game but we had a full week to prepare the players. I am trying to manage winning the game but also preparing for the next one against Bilbao.

“We need to bring intensity. We need to be focused. We have lost games in set pieces so we have to improve our intensity today. We need to press and we need to take advantage of every moment they give us.”

Amorim: Rashford and Antony departures will help Man Utd

“In January, you were talking about Rashford and Antony, we lost these players and didn’t bring new ones,” he said. “It was a risk. But there are things here that are more important than scoring 10 more goals this season.

“We are trying to do something that is more important. We can hurt the squad now but in the future it will help the club. I think we are on that path. That is clear. In that moment it was my idea. I was trying to help the team and sometimes the players that need something different. That is all.”

Special day for Bournemouth

How things have changed for Bournemouth fans over the last decade or so. They entered administration for a second time and were relegated to League Two in 2008, nearly falling out of the Football League. Now they are fighting for European football for next season and today represents their 300th Premier League game.

Match preview

Bournemouth welcome Manchester United to the south coast looking to continue their hopes of securing European football at the Vitality Stadium next season. Andoni Iraola’s side already have their highest number of points (49) in a top-flight campaign and they begin the day in 10th, knowing victory would take them into eighth. Fulham and Brighton won yesterday to leapfrog Bournemouth but Iraola’s side can jump back over those sides with a win. Iraola knows it will be tough to secure Europe next season with a tough run-in and is taking it game by game.

“At the end, we do not know what is going to happen,” Iraola said. “What is going to be the position that gives you the access to Europe. More or less, we need to think is that there is seven teams that are ahead of us, comfortably ahead of us, and there are some teams around us…three, four teams that we are fighting for probably one spot, or maybe nothing because we do not know if Crystal Palace wins the cup, there is nothing to play for.

“But we want to think that at least there will be one position there that is open because the distances – are one point, two points – are really, really short and we know it is going to be difficult, especially for us because we have a difficult schedule. We have to play against teams that are very good. But now at the end of the season, every point, whoever is the opposition, is very expensive and we have to go week by week and try to arrive with chances until the last game.”

The hosts will be without Luis Sinisterra with a thigh injury whilst Enes Unal and Ryan Christie are long-term absentees. Bournemouth are unbeaten in their last three games against Manchester United, scoring eight goals in those games.

Meanwhile Manchester United, who could suffer their highest number of defeats (16) in a Premier League campaign if they were to lose today, very much have all their eggs in the Europa League basket. Languishing down in 15th place, all their attention is on their upcoming Europa League semi-final against Athletic Bilbao. Despite this, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has stressed that their focus is on today, not on Thursday night’s first leg against Bilbao.

“The focus is that we have to face it. We need to have that feeling that every game is important and we have to win every game because that is a feeling that is important not to lose. We are going to face this game [against Bournemouth] with the best team because we had a full week to prepare. Some of the players did not play against Wolves and sometimes if you recover so much the players, it is a bad thing. We will try to manage everything to win this game and prepare for the next one. It is massive because it is one team that presses a lot and has something to fight for in this moment with European nights.

“We know the quality of the squad, of the manager and the way they play, press, the one on one that they have, the mobility of their players, it is going to be a really tough match. We have to be focused on this game because it is here. Every game is really important and we need to win games in the Premier League. But in certain details, we need to not only focus on this game, but also in the next one. I try not to mention Bilbao in the week. We are just focused on Bournemouth.”

Amorim has confirmed that Diogo Dalot could miss the rest of the season, joining the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Joshua Zirkzee. In the reverse fixture back in December, Bournemouth won 3-0 at Old Trafford, a repeat of the scoreline they achieved at the same ground last season. When these sides met at the Vitality Stadium last season, the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
