NAPOLEON — The Hillsdale varsity competitive cheer team delivered its strongest performance of the season Saturday, winning the Napoleon Invitational with a score of 650.56. Reading finished second with 608.90.
The Hornets opened with their highest Round 1 score of the year; an effort made more noteworthy after weather conditions limited them to just one practice this week.
“We’re incredibly proud of these girls,” Hillsdale coach Tara Scott said. “They showed up focused and ready to compete.”

Scott credited senior flyer Brooklyn Whaley for her reliability in high‑pressure skills and her overall leadership. As Hillsdale’s only flyer, Whaley anchors several key elements, including the team’s twist cradles — which secure their two‑point twist bonus — and the back tucks in Round 3 that earn the tuck bonus.
“Brooklyn has fully embraced that responsibility and continues to deliver when it matters most,” Scott said.
A four‑year member of both sideline and competitive cheer, Whaley has brought experience and composure to a young roster, Scott said. Her ability to keep the atmosphere loose, even during intense meets, has become a defining part of the team dynamic.
“At this meet in particular, we jokingly talked about her adding a little ‘wink’ for the judges,” Scott said. “She leaned into the moment and made it fun and memorable, almost catching the coaches off guard with laughter. That moment really captures who Brooklyn is — confident, playful and fully engaged.
"She truly loves the sport and her team, brings great energy to every performance, and adds just the right amount of sass. Brooklyn is an integral part of our success and a joy to coach"
Before Saturday’s victory, all three Hillsdale competitive cheer teams placed third at the Jackson Northwest Invitational. The Hornets next host the fourth annual Hustle at the Hive on Feb. 7.
