Hillsdale County bowlers dominate MHSAA regionals, eye state titles

HILLSDALE COUNTY — The Michigan High School Athletic Association bowling state finals will include strong Hillsdale County representation after a busy week of regional competition.

Jonesville swept the Division 4 boys and girls team championships at Jax 60 in Jackson, while Hillsdale sophomore Evan Grant rallied into the top seven at Royal Scot in Lansing to qualify for the Division 3 individual state finals.

Only the top seven finishers in each individual regional advanced.

Jonesville boys, girls claim Division 4 regional crowns​


The state’s top-ranked Division 4 boys team lived up to its billing. Jonesville captured the Region 27 championship with a 3,162 total, finishing ahead of runner-up Homer at 2,999. The Comets showed balance throughout baker play before closing with traditional team games of 890 and 884 to secure the title.

Jonesville’s girls, ranked No. 2 in Division 4, followed with a regional championship of their own. The Comets rolled a 2,905 total to top Hudson’s 2,783 and advance to the state finals. Jonesville remained steady across baker games and team play, building separation late in the day.

Will Carleton Academy competed in the same Division 4 boys regional and finished 12th overall with a 1,542 total.

Hillsdale teams compete in Division 3 regional​


At Royal Scot, Hillsdale’s boys finished sixth in Division 3 with a 3,069 total. The Hornets remained competitive through baker play and closed with team games of 889 and 821 but did not advance as a team.

Hillsdale’s girls placed fifth in their Division 3 regional with a 2,297 total in a field won by Grass Lake.

Though neither Hornet team moved on, Hillsdale found success in singles competition.

Grant surges into final qualifying position​

Grant earned the seventh and final state-qualifying position in the Division 3 boys singles field with a six-game total of 1,141. After opening the day with a 137, the sophomore responded with five 200-plus performances, including a high game of 212. He also rolled games of 205 and 203 during his climb into the top seven, showing poise after the early deficit.

Teammate Carter Simmons narrowly missed state qualification, finishing 13th with a 1,102 total that included a 245 high game. Nate Portteus placed 27th with 1,006 and rolled a 202 during his series. Ben Champion finished 34th with a 964 total and posted a 201 high game. Collin Mullaly took 56th at 867, highlighted by a 155 game, while Joel Tucker placed 57th with an 843 total and a high of 169.

On the girls side, Neldelya Chosa led Hillsdale with a 16th-place finish at 859 and a high game of 166. Ava Giminez followed in 25th place with an 804 total and a best game of 158. Kaydence Hartzler placed 32nd at 768 with a 147 high, Adeline Beckner was 38th at 754 with a 140, Madelyn Staten finished 40th at 737 with a 134, and Chloe Denman placed 53rd with a 667 total and a 125 high game.

Comets qualify in Division 4 singles​


Jonesville placed three bowlers inside the top seven in the Division 4 boys singles tournament.

Kyle Covey led the way with a runner-up finish, totaling 1,187 and rolling a tournament-best 257 game during his six-game set. Marshall Baker, a senior, placed fifth with a 1,126 total and a high game of 201 to secure his state berth. His younger brother, Maverick Baker, a sophomore, finished sixth with 1,124 and posted standout games of 229 and 224 as the brothers advanced together.

Carson Stukey narrowly missed qualifying, finishing eighth at 1,067 despite rolling a 236 high game. Chance Lucas placed 12th with a 1,033 total and a 221 game, while Jag Lawrence finished 14th at 975 and recorded a high of 181.

Jonesville also advanced three bowlers in the Division 4 girls singles field.

Harper James placed third overall with a 1,051 total and rolled a 205 high game. Morgan Dilyard followed in fourth place with a 988 total and a high of 199. Karli Wittingen secured fifth place with 978 and posted a 204 game during her qualifying performance.

Zoe Woodruff narrowly missed state qualification, finishing eighth with a 928 total and a high game of 192. Addison Luna placed 15th at 850 with a 179 high, and Grace Maddox finished 17th at 829 and rolled a 168.

Will Carleton Academy’s David Maier placed 24th with an 882 total and a high game of 181. Max Maier finished 53rd at 714 with a 134 high, Emma Hood placed 61st with a 555 total and a 124 game, and Western Watkins was 62nd at 528 with a 112 high.

State finals ahead​


The MHSAA bowling state finals are scheduled for Feb. 27-28. Division 3 competition will be held at Jax 60 in Jackson, while Division 4 will take place at Skore Lanes. Tickets must be purchased online through GoFan.

With Jonesville sending both teams and six individual qualifiers — including the Baker brothers — and Hillsdale adding Grant to the Division 3 field, Hillsdale County will carry significant momentum into the season’s final weekend
