CEDARVILLE — Hillman softball is returning to East Lansing.

The Tigers booked their ticket to the MHSAA Division 4 state semifinals for a third consecutive year after capturing a 5-2 victory over Norway in a quarterfinal clash at Cedarville on Tuesday, June 9.

The Tigers (33-9) were spearheaded once more by senior pitcher Gretchen Weiland, who struck out eight, allowed one hit, and surrendered two runs across seven innings, earning the win.

Hillman struck first in the top of the first with a double by Madelyn Oswald that scored Abby Oswald and made it a 1-0 advantage in favor of the Tigers.

After multiple scoreless innings by both teams, the Tigers used a four-run fifth to take control of the contest. Delivering a clutch hit was Weiland, who ripped a two-run single for a 4-0 Hillman advantage.

While Norway trimmed the deficit to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth, it couldn’t muster any more runs against Weiland, who finished off the Hillman win with a strikeout in the bottom of the seventh.

Offensively, Abby Oswald went 2-for-4 with a run scored to fuel the Tigers, who received a hit apiece from Gretchen Weiland (two RBIs), Aubrey Weiland (RBI, run), Madelyn Oswald (two RBIs), Peyton Banks (run) and Peyton Szlag (run). Raelyn Konieczny scored a run.

With the win, No. 2-ranked Hillman heads to Michigan State University’s Sechia Stadium, where it’ll face No. 1 Mendon in a semifinal rematch. Last season, Mendon (30-3) captured a 4-2 victory over the Tigers and beat Unionville-Sebewaing in the 2025 state title game. Defending champion Mendon earned an 8-4 victory over Petersburg Summerfield in its quarterfinal on Tuesday.

The Hillman-Mendon showdown will be a 3 p.m. start at MSU on Friday, June 12. The winner of that matchup faces the Brown City-Fowler semifinal winner in a 5:30 p.m. title game on Saturday, June 13.
