For some idea of how difficult conditions were in the opening round of the Golfweek Pirate’s Cup, consider that only one man in any of the five divisions broke par. For that, John D. Wright now has a comfortable lead entering the second round at TPC Tampa Bay in Lutz, Florida.
The day began calmly enough on Florida’s west coast, but as the round progressed, winds picked up to 20 mph sustained with gusts of up to 30 mph. Wright, of Fairhope, Alabama, hardly seemed bothered. His card included four birdies and three bogeys for a 1-under 71. That helped him open up a three-shot lead in the Senior division on Brendan Hester of Singer Island, Florida, and Greg Earnhardt of Greensboro, North Carolina, who both had rounds of 73.
Wright, who qualified for the 2022 U.S. Senior Amateur, tops a field full of talent at TPC Tampa Bay. A little farther down the leaderboard, Jerry Gunthorpe of Ovid, Michigan, and Joe Alfieri, who is playing in his hometown of Lutz, Florida, share fourth place at 3 over. Gunthorpe, who won the Golfweek Desert Senior Showdown last fall and was runner-up at the U.S. Senior Amateur in 2021, eagled the par-4 13th and birdied the par-5 14th, but had six bogeys on his card. Alfieri, meanwhile, played the front nine in 1 under but had a very colorful card – including two double-bogeys – on the back nine.
Two men lead a small Mid-Master field as Haymes Snedeker of Point Clear, Alabama, and Peter Vitali of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, both had rounds of 3-over 74 to open. The next-best round, a 7-over 78, came from Chin Park.
The Super Senior division features a slightly spread-out leaderboard, particularly at the top. John Bailey of Nashville, Tennessee, had a 2-over 73 and leads by three shots. Bailey held it together on the front nine admirably. After bogeys at Nos. 2 and 3 and then a double-bogey on No. 5, he righted the ship with birdies at Nos. 6 and 8.
Bailey leads Bob Beck of Allentown, Pennsylvania, and Allen Barber of Yorktown, Virginia, by three. Beck is currently the top-ranked player in the Golfweek Senior National Amateur Rankings.
Terry Tyson, of Perrysburg, Ohio, leads the Legend division at 5 over. Bill Engel of St. Augustine, Florida, is 6 over and has a narrow one-shot lead in the Super Legends division.
