The Granite Hills boys soccer team is heading to the CIF State Southern California Division IV regional championship game.

The Cougars defeated Santa Ana Valley 2-1 in the regional semifinals Thursday night at Newton T. Bass Stadium.

David Cabrera scored both goals for Granite Hills, with Alec Jimenez assisting on each, as the Cougars built a 2-0 lead. Santa Ana Valley cut the deficit late in the first half on a goal off a corner kick, but Granite Hills held on the rest of the way.

Granite Hills opened the regional playoffs with a 2-0 victory over Esperanza on Tuesday as the No. 2 seed in the bracket.

Santa Ana Valley entered the regional tournament after winning the CIF-Southern Section Division 5 championship Feb. 28 and defeated La Jolla 3-1 in the regional quarterfinals.

Granite Hills will face University in the regional championship game Saturday in a rematch of the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 final on Feb. 28. University defeated the Cougars 3-0 in Irvine.

Granite Hills coach Paul Casarez believes limiting mistakes in goal and controlling the tempo will be key in the rematch against University.

“We need to stick to our game,” Casarez said. “What we excel at. And we’ve got to be better at defending their direct set pieces.”

University advanced to the regional title game after Chatsworth forfeited its semifinal matchup.

Here’s a look at the rest of the regional playoff action involving High Desert teams:

Division II boys soccer​

San Pasqual 1, Sultana 0​


At Escondido, Sultana’s season ended with a loss to San Pasqual in the regional semifinals for the second consecutive year.

San Pasqual scored the match’s lone goal in the second half.

Sultana reached the semifinals after defeating No. 1-seeded Torrey Pines 3-2 in the regional quarterfinals on Tuesday.

The Sultans advanced to the regional tournament after reaching the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 semifinals, where they lost to Fontana.

San Pasqual advances to face Mira Monte, which defeated Fontana 2-1 in the other semifinal.

Division V boys basketball​

Canyon 67, Victor Valley 56​


At Canyon Country, the Jackrabbits struggled to contain Canyon’s Isaac Yuhico, who scored 41 points in the second round of the regional playoffs.

Canyon led 21-16 after the first quarter and 36-31 at halftime before extending its lead to 55-42 entering the fourth quarter. Victor Valley cut the deficit to 59-51 with five minutes remaining, but struggled offensively down the stretch, going 1 for 12 from the field, including 0 for 6 from 3-point range.

DeAnthony Dyer led Victor Valley with 14 points. Nicholas Craft added 10 points, Kayden Murray had nine, and Aiden Tanks finished with seven.

One of Victor Valley’s leading scorers, Jesiah Hyder, was unavailable for the game.

Victor Valley opened the regional playoffs with a 72-55 victory over Edgewood on Tuesday.

The Jackrabbits entered the regional tournament as the No. 6 seed after winning the CIF-Southern Section Division 8 championship Feb. 28 with a victory over South El Monte.

Canyon advances to face Sylmar, which beat Preuss UCSD 99-76, in the regional semifinals Saturday.
