South African Garrick Higgo was on time for his start in the second round of the PGA Championship a day after taking a two-stroke penalty for being late to the first tee at Aronimink (Emilee Chinn)
Garrick Higgo made it to the tee on time for Friday's second round of the PGA Championship, a day after taking a two-stroke penalty for a late arrival.
The 27-year-old South African went off the 10th tee at 12:43 p.m. (1643 GMT) as scheduled, blasting the ball 361 yards into the fairway.
Higgo was issued the penalty for being seconds late to his 7:18 a.m. Thursday start time for his opening round at Aronimink, then fired a one-under-par 69 after the punishment.
Had Higgo scored the opening par he fired Thursday instead of a double-bogey due to the penalty, he would have shared the 18-hole lead at three-under in an already record-setting pack of seven, the most 18-hole co-leaders in a major since 1969.
"I'm super proud," Higgo said after his opening round. "A lot of guys would have shot a lot after what I went through.
"I think it shows a lot of mental strength the way I kept fighting."
Higgo spent too much time on an adjacent practice putting green without his watch or cell phone and arrived at the tee area seconds late.
"I wouldn't have been late if I knew I was running late," Higgo said.
