CANTON — Heuvelton manufactured seven runs in the first three innings and the Hermon-DeKalb bats erupted to produce six runs in the sixth and seventh innings in the Section 10 Class D baseball and softball championship games staged on adjoining diamonds at St. Lawrence University Tuesday.
The top seeded and undefeated NAC West Division Champion Heuvelton Bulldogs (20-0) extended a season-long pattern taking what is available and giving away very little in an 8-1 win over NAC East Division kingpin Parishville-Hopkinton.
The Bulldogs capitalized on walks and hit batters with stolen bases, aggressive baserunning, squeeze bunts and sacrifice flies while Jude Spooner parlayed a darting curveball and a well located fastball to pitch a three-hitter and allowed just one unearned run in the sixth inning.
Third-seeded H-D (13-4) claimed its first Class D softball title in 30 years with a 12-5 win over top-seeded NAC West Division Champion Harrisville (17-4). Both teams will host regional final games of the NYS Tournament Saturday at SLU.
Heuvelton 8 - P-H 1: The Bulldogs scored all the runs they would eventually need pushing across two runs without a hit in the first inning against P-H starter Gage Caskinette. Parker Felt drew a walk, Quint Brothers reached on an error scoring Felt, and Levi Biller was hit by a pitch and scored on a wild pitch.
The Bulldogs’ first five batters scored in the fifth inning where Felt and Brothers (RBI) singled, Biller and Spooner walked and Ryley Liscum was hit by a pitch. Cory Ethridge plated two-runners with a bunt, Larry Young followed with a sacrifice fly and Biller scored on a wild pitch.
Biller scored his third of the game in the fifth inning after singling and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Ryley Liscum. Felt singled twice in the game and Lysham Young added a single.
Wade Caskinette, who allowed just one run in three innings of relief, singled in the sixth inning and scored the lone P-H run on a two-out error. Charlie Clark Vallance singled in the first inning and Sean Murray singled to round out the three P-H hits.
H-D 12 - Harrisville 5: After winning the NAC West Division title last year, the Green Demons set winning the sectional title as the number goal at the start of the 2026 season. But the Green Demons were unable to generate early momentum toward that goal because they had several games rained out.
But they started to string wins in the stretch run of the season and one of those wins came against Harrisville which completed the season with seven games in six days.
“When we beat Harrisville in our second game with them I felt that our girls were on their way. And they were. Our bats came alive and we had two pitchers who could pick us up,” said H-D Bob Bice after the Green Demons won a sectional title for the first time since 1996.
Coach Bice used both of his pitchers in the championship game where Maya Green drew the start and allowed one run through four innings. Bishop came on in the fifth inning and allowed three unearned runs in the seventh inning where the Green Demons made three errors.
Harrisvile took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when NAC West Division MVP Avery Chartrand ripped a lead off triple and scored a single by Lila Stephenson. The Green Demons took a 12-1 lead with a pair of six run bursts in the sixth and seventh inning where Peyton Dusharm singled and tripled, Peyton Wright and Lauren Holland singled twice singled twice, Bishop singled and Nellie French doubled and tripled.
French also singled in the game and Green scored three times.
Chartrand singled, tripled and doubled for Harrisville and Lila and Moriah Stephenson singled.
