Westgate football’s Chance Archangel wasn’t expecting his recruitment process to get so hectic, so fast.
“It went crazy,” Archangel said. “After my sophomore season, it went crazy and I really wasn't expecting it. When I was a freshman, I just had a couple offers but then coaches kept calling me and telling me I was getting offered.”
Quickly, the four-star defensive edge became one of the hottest prospects in Louisiana, but his heart remained with the team that first saw potential in him, Texas A&M. Archangel committed to the Aggies on June 2, choosing them over Miami, Alabama, Notre Dame and Florida State.
“They were my first offer and ever since I got the offer, I’ve been researching the school,” Archangel said. “I went to a game, I visited some practices and I just knew. I was on my phone and in my notes I started writing something and I was like I know that this is where I want to be.
“With the relationships with the coaches and the culture, the fans and the city of College Station — that’s what help me come to my decision.”
Along with the culture and feel of College Station, Archangel felt like he could be the right fit for the Aggies, who are coming off of an NCAA College Football Playoff appearance.
“I did the research,” Archangel said. “Seeing how the coaches developed my position, I could see myself fitting in these schemes the way they broke it down when I went to visit.”
Archangel’s early commitment to the Aggies gives him more time to focus on his upcoming junior campaign as Westgate is itching to get over the second-round playoff hump this fall. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds, Archangel did it all for the Tigers’ defense. He recorded 78 total tackles, 70 tackles for losses and seven sacks.
That earned him Class 4A District 4 first team, All-Metro first team and All-State honarable mentions. This summer, Archangel is looking to improve on his speed and conditioning as well as getting stronger as his role will be even bigger heading into the 2027 season.
“We’re going to play Chance everywhere once again and it comes down to scheme,” Westgate coach Ryan Antoine said. “Losing Trandin Benjamin to Lamar, losing Lenord Howard to McNeese and losing Makai Wells to Coffeyville, those were our three guys that were in the middle of our defense so we gotta replace those guys. We’re trying to figure that out right now in the summer.”
Archangel will be ready and willing to fill in where he’s needed for the Tigers this season as he aims to double his stats from last year and step foot in the Caesars Superdome.
