There are many unique traditions that are a part of USC football games at the Coliseum. One of those traditions is the tunnel captain. When the Trojans take the field before each home game, they are led by either a former player or notable celebrity. For Saturday night’s game against Michigan State, the Trojans are bringing out the big guns. Earlier this week, USC announced that this week’s tunnel captain would be none other than Heisman Trophy quarterback Matt Leinart.
As USC’s starting quarterback from 2003-2005, Leinart led the Trojans to an incredible 37-2 record. USC won the 2003 and 2004 national championships, giving Leinart as many national titles in his college career as losses. In 2005, the Trojans came up one game short of winning a third consecutive title, falling to Texas in an instant classic Rose Bowl.
Leinart was named a first-team All-American and a Heisman finalist in both 2004 and 2005. In 2004, he won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the second USC quarterback to take home the honor in three years. He finished his time in Cardinal and Gold as USC’s all-time leader in touchdown passes and No. 2 in passing yards—although he was later passed by Matt Barkley in both categories.
Leinart has led the Trojans out of the tunnel twice before—in 2013 vs. Stanford and in 2014 vs. Notre Dame. With USC having won both of those games, Lincoln Riley’s team is hoping that Leinart can bring them good luck against Michigan State on Saturday night.
