The Miami Heat seemed like a logical landing spot for Khris Middleton.
The Heat had already pulled off a blockbuster trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Why not add his former Milwaukee Bucks running mate, too?
Well, that's not happening.
Middleton has signed back with the Washington Wizards, according to a post on X on Tuesday night from ESPN's Shams Charania -- it's technically a sign-and-trade with the Dallas Mavericks that connects a lot of previously agreed-upon deals together:

"Quietly, on a not-very-good Mavericks squad, Middleton put up solid production," Bleacher Report's Eric Pincus wrote in his recent free agency rankings. "The 34-year-old veteran wing started 16 of 29 games, averaging 10 points on 39.1 percent shooting from three since his trade to Dallas from the Washington Wizards. Middleton won't get near his 2025-26 salary, but he should find a home at a lower price as a reserve on a contender needing an experienced presence."
Middleton going back to the Wizards now is different than his previous stint in Washington.

This Wizards team has acquired other veterans in the hopes of competing sooner rather than later.
Now, they're going to be aiming for the playoffs in the Eastern Conference, and Middleton is a part of it.
