Jun. 22—BEMIDJI — The Headwaters Music and Arts Chess Club held its inaugural tournament on May 31, bringing together players of all ages and skill levels for an afternoon of competition.
The tournament featured three divisions. In the Learner Division, Kaia Maie earned first place and a $25 prize. Dan Batson took top honors in the Mentor Division, receiving $50, while Yohan Maie claimed first place in the Advanced Division and a $100 prize.
Prize sponsorship for the tournament was provided by Lancy Egley. Batson, who serves as volunteer chess club coordinator, organized and led the event.
"It's been really great for my kids to come and be challenged by more experienced players," Kaia and Yohan's mother, Erika Mork, said in a release. "The club is well organized, consistent and fun."
Yohan continued on to compete at The Minneapolis Open, a U.S. Chess Federation-rated tournament, the weekend of June 5, where he won two trophies and two cash prizes.
The Headwaters Chess Club meets from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. every Sunday at Headwaters. The club welcomes players of all ages and experience levels.
