Arizona State football legend Cam Skattebo sent fans into a frenzy when he botched his backflip attempt during a Fanatics event on July 18.
Social media exploded after Skattebo landed awkwardly, but one of the biggest questions was what New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh would say about the stunt. Skattebo is recovering from an open ankle dislocation, a fibula fracture and a deltoid ligament rupture in his right leg that prematurely ended his rookie season.
A day after the flip, Skattebo attempted to properly explain his decision.
Skattebo clarified that he wasn't on firm ground and had too much of a cushion, which caused him to stumble. However, he confirmed he's "perfectly fine."
Harbaugh quickly put speculation to rest during a recent appearance on the Bleav in Giants podcast, when co-host Bob Papa asked for his thoughts on Skattebo's flip. Harbaugh said he hadn't yet spoken to Skattebo but wasn't overly concerned about the flip.
"My reaction was this: Dude, at least stick it. You know what I mean? Land the thing if you’re going to do it, you know?" Harbaugh said. "That was my first reaction."
“But Skat’s going to be ready to go," Harbaugh added. "He’s been working super hard. He has really been training like crazy, and his mind is on camp. He’s healthy, he’s ready to roll and I can’t wait to see him out there at practice."
The Giants are hoping the 24-year-old will remain healthy ahead of his second NFL season. The 2025 fourth-round pick carried over the bruising style that made him an instant fan favorite at ASU and generated 410 yards and five touchdowns on 101 carries. He also added 24 catches for 207 yards and two scores through the air.
With Harbaugh taking over the Giants, Skattebo is likely expected to take a lot of reps for a run-heavy offense.
