The Atlanta Hawks recently used a two-way contract slot to add forward Jalen Wilson, adding another young player to the possible rotation.
Atlanta's signing of the former Brooklyn Nets forward adds a young player to its rotation as the Hawks continue to build around their core. Wilson became an unrestricted free agent earlier this offseason when the Nets declined to extend his qualifying offer.
HoopsHype's Michael Scotto reported the signing of Wilson on July 20, which will give the young forward a chance to play on an upcoming franchise who desire to push past the first round in the postseason.
Wilson was drafted in the second round at No.51 in the 2023 NBA Draft and played his first three seasons with the Nets. Last season, he played 54 games where he started in two.
The Texas native averaged 7.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists. He shot 35.5 percent from the three-point range, averaging 15.9 minutes per game.
While the signing of Wilson doesn't guarantee him a roster spot once the season begins, it provides Atlanta with youth, depth, and flexibility. The franchise could allow him to develop while earning minutes if the team picks up from where it left off after making the postseason in 2026.
Two-way contracts help teams evaluate talent without significant financial commitments. Alex Caruso, Naz Reid, Austin Reaves, Duncan Robinson, Jose Alvarado, and Luguentz Dort were previous two-way contract players.
While there is no guarantee Wilson will take that kind of leap, the Hawks are building the roster without taking huge risks.
This offseason, the Hawks have continued to build their roster through free agency, the draft, and by trade.
The franchise drafted Kingston Flemings at No. 8 and Zuby Ejiofor at No.23. Both players have been active in Summer League play. Flemings averaged seven points, 6.5 assists, four rebounds, and 1.5 steals in Las Vegas. He has struggled to find his shot at times.
Ejofor, on the other hand, turned some heads as he averaged 12.5 points, five rebounds, and 2.5 assists. He also finished one game with a double-double of 19 points and 15 rebounds against the Oklahoma City Thunder this summer.
In addition to drafting two young, explosive players, the organization extended CJ McCollum to a one-year, $21 million contract and signed Jock Landale to a one-year, $14 million contract. Coupled with the signings, Atlanta traded for Aaron Wiggins from the Oklahoma City Thunder for two second-round picks.
The franchise acquired Devin Carter from the Sacramento Kings. Both Wiggins and Carter are under 30. Recently, the Hawks bolstered their defense with the acquisition of Luguentz Dort on July 19, completing a multi-player deal.
