One of only eight countries to ever win the World Cup, England claimed its lone championship in 1966 on home soil.

England defeated West Germany 4-2 after extra time in the final at Wembley Stadium in London on July 30, 1966, getting a hat trick from Geoff Hurst, including both goals in extra time. Hurst was knighted in England years later.

The Three Lions have been chasing that high ever since and have not reached the World Cup final in the past 60 years. This year's appearance in the semifinals marks the team's third since the famous World Cup win, losing to West Germany in 1990 and Croatia in 2018.

England's World Cup victory was the subject of a "Mad Men" episode, in which one of the agency's partners watches the final with other English ex-pats at a bar in New York, forging a bond with a representative from Jaguar cars – who is looking for advertising representation in the American market.
