A member and ambassador of the Harlem Globetrotters made a surprise appearance at a Norfolk elementary and middle school last week.
Standing 6-foot-8, forward Julian “Zeus” McClurkin gave a rousing display of his skills on the basketball court and emphasized the importance of being kind and respectful to over about 75 middle school students of Southside STEM Academy,
“Just be a nice person,” he said. “The world is trying to make people mean. We need more nice people in the world.”
McClurkin, who holds six Guinness World Records, spoke of the exhibition basketball team’s history, which has been entertaining stadiums around the world for over a century.
Excited howls echoed from the walls of the gym as McClurkin taught a handful of students a few of his trick shots. Ultimately, his message to the students was simple: be the best version of themselves.
