The Los Angeles Angels salvaged the final game of their three-game set against the San Francisco Giants with a 4-3 win, and the Halos built an early lead and managed to hold off the Giants’ ninth inning rally against two different Angels relievers.
The Angels broke out early in this one with a run in the first inning and three more in the fourth inning off Giants starter Carson Whisenhunt, with the first run coming on an RBI groundout by Jorge Soler. Soler then hit a solo homer in the fourth to double the Halos lead, and followed with a two-run shot to make it 4-0.
Jose Soriano was on his game in this one as he contines to return to form. He did allow an unearned run in the fifth, as Willy Adames got a cheap double that was deflected by shortstop Zach Neto, and Drew Cavanaugh walked. Luis Arraez then got the home run on a groundout, courtesy of yet another error from Neto, who has definitely been subpar defensively this season.
Soriano was out after five as he gave up just the one run on three hits and three walks to go with five strikeouts. He continues to increase his trade value, so expect the rumor mill to crank up even more this week.
The 4-1 score held until the ninth, which turned into a total adventure with Sam Bachman on the mound to close it out.The trouble started with a leadoff walk to Jesus Rodriguez. Adams grounded into a forceout, but Bachman walked Cavanaugh, and manager Kurt Suzuki then went to the bullpen and brought in Mitch Farris to get a favorable matchup.
That matchup disappeared when Daniel Susac was brought in to pinch hit, and he lined the first pitch to Mike Trout in center to get the second out. But Luis Arraez doubled off the wall to right, and suddenly it was a 4-3 game with the tying run on second.
But Farris was able to get a called third strike on a ball looked to be well inside, but the Giants were out of challenges, so the call stood and the Angels got the win. It was Farris’s first major league save, and his first since he was in the low minors at Augusta. Soriano got the win to go to 9-6, and Mike Trout had a 4-for-for game to go with the power surge.
