Last week during the Ohio Cup, Tanner Bibee put together one of his strongest outings of the 2026 season. He logged a quality start, but still was credited with the loss as the Cleveland Guardians offense couldn’t give their starter any run support.

That’s been the theme of the season for Bibee. While he hasn’t been perfect on the mound by any means, the pitcher has struggled to get any run support from his lineup, and it looked like the same story was unfolding on Wednesday at Comerica Park.

Bibee turned in one of his best outings on Wednesday evening during Cleveland’s series-clinching victory against the Detroit Tigers. He threw a season-high eight innings, while only giving up one earned run, striking out five hitters, and issuing only one walk.

Bibee said after the game that his fastball, which has been shaky at times this year, was really working for him once he established it early.

"I feel like that's probably the most, I'm guessing, probably the most heaters ever done in the start ever," said Bibee.

He ended up generating four swings and misses off the fastball, the most out of any pitch in his arsenal in this start.

The issue was that it looked like Bibee would once again be credited with a loss as the Guardians were held scoreless on offense until their final chance of the game.

Finally, in the ninth inning, Cleveland manufactured a run on a single, a line drive, a sacrifice bunt, and a ground out, to tie up the game; Truly, “Guards Ball” at its finest.

The Guardians eventually added on two more runs in extra innings, thanks to an Angel Martinez triple and a Jose Ramirez double to secure a 3-2 win.

The ironic piece to this is that, for as well as Bibee pitched, he wasn’t even credited with a win since the Guardians took the lead after he came out of the game. That honor went to Colin Holdermann, who, in all fairness, did come off with a massive hold for the Guardians in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Putting Bibee’s record aside, an outdated metric to track a pitcher’s success, he now owns a 3.28 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP across his five starts in May. It is nice to see the starter heading in the right direction, and Wednesday was just another example of that.
