The Cleveland Guardians were already having a bad Saturday. Angel Martinez and Chase DeLauter had both left their game with injuries.

And then Jose Ramirez got hurt. And his might be the worst injury of the bunch.

Ramirez took a swing during Saturday's game and broke a bone in his left hand.

It's the hamate bone, that nagging one for hitters that can be tough to overcome in short order.

"He had a similar injury I think to his right hand a few years ago," manager Stephen Vogt said after the game, via the Associated Press. "He tried to go back out. He knew the position we were in, grabbed his glove and said, 'Maybe I can still play defense,' but he couldn't squeeze his glove. Hosey wanted to get back out there to help us win that game. He just couldn't."

It's a devastating reality for the Guardians.

How do the Guardians replace Jose Ramirez?​

Clearly, Ramirez is pretty much irreplaceable.

The Guardians will have to put someone in the lineup, though, and they'll do their best.

Most likely, Daniel Schneeman will get the regular starts at third base.

Beyond Schneeman, there will likely need to be a call-up from the minor leagues.

Juan Brito and Angel Genao seem like the two obvious infield promotions. Brito struggled in his first MLB action earlier this year, while Genao hasn't yet played in the majors.

The Guardians will do what they can to tread water in the meantime.

If Cleveland struggles, it could lead to trades they weren't anticipating making. They probably figured this summer would require some additions. A Ramirez absence could set up for trading players away and looking toward next season if things get tough in a hurry.
