The Cleveland Guardians are making it clear that they intend to emerge from the MLB trade deadline as one of the American League’s most improved teams. Cleveland is acquiring first baseman and designated hitter Nathaniel Lowe from the Cincinnati Reds, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The return heading to Cincinnati was not immediately reported.
The move gives the Guardians an experienced left-handed hitter with a proven ability to reach base and drive the ball. Lowe is batting .266 with 12 home runs, 17 doubles, 37 RBI and an .820 OPS across 83 games this season.
Cleveland’s latest trade arrived shortly after MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported that the Guardians were acquiring All-Star left-hander Foster Griffin from the Washington Nationals. Adding an accomplished hitter and one of baseball’s biggest breakout pitchers on the same day represents an aggressive attempt to upgrade both sides of the roster.
Nathaniel Lowe brings immediate help to Cleveland lineup
Lowe has quietly put together a strong offensive season for Cincinnati.
The 31-year-old recorded 66 hits and drew 28 walks across 276 plate appearances with the Reds. His .820 OPS would provide a meaningful boost to a Cleveland lineup that needed another established run producer.
Lowe was also playing some of his best baseball immediately before the trade. He went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, two runs and a walk during Cincinnati’s 10-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. Lowe recorded eight hits, four doubles and four RBI across his final four starts with the Reds.
His home production was particularly impressive. Lowe hit .254 with nine home runs, eight doubles, 20 RBI and a .343 on-base percentage across 41 games in Cincinnati. Although ESPN listed Lowe as Cincinnati’s designated hitter, he has extensive experience at first base. That should give Cleveland some flexibility to rotate him between first base and DH depending on matchups and the health of the rest of its lineup.
Guardians are acquiring a proven postseason hitter
Lowe’s value extends beyond his 2026 statistics. The former 13th-round pick spent the first two seasons of his MLB career with the Tampa Bay Rays before establishing himself as an everyday player with the Texas Rangers. He enjoyed his best offensive season in 2022, batting .302 with 27 home runs, 76 RBI and an .851 OPS on his way to winning an American League Silver Slugger Award.
Lowe then helped Texas win the 2023 World Series. He started all 17 of the Rangers’ postseason games and delivered several important hits during the championship run.
He also won an AL Gold Glove at first base in 2023, demonstrating that his contributions have not been limited to the batter’s box.
Across 922 career games, Lowe has accumulated 862 hits, 154 doubles, 119 home runs and 450 RBI. That track record gives the Guardians a level of experience and stability that can be difficult to find at the deadline. Lowe does strike out frequently, recording 70 strikeouts in 248 at-bats this season. However, his patience and power should make him a significant addition to Cleveland’s lineup.
Cleveland doubles down with Lowe and Foster Griffin
Acquiring Lowe would have qualified as a notable deadline move by itself. Pairing him with Griffin dramatically changes the scope of Cleveland’s day. Griffin is 12-3 with a 3.06 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 116 strikeouts across 129 1/3 innings for Washington. He earned his first All-Star selection after emerging as one of the most surprising success stories of the 2026 season.
Lowe addresses a need in the batting order, while Griffin gives Cleveland another dependable option for its starting rotation. Together, they represent a major investment in the Guardians’ postseason chances. The timing of the Lowe trade is also fascinating because he recently faced Cleveland. Lowe appeared as a pinch hitter against the Guardians on July 29, less than one week before reportedly joining them.

Reds turn productive veteran into future value
Cincinnati entered Monday at 53-58 and 16 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. That position made it difficult to justify holding every veteran through the deadline. Lowe had been one of the Reds’ most productive hitters, but trading him gives the organization an opportunity to add younger talent while opening at-bats for other players over the final two months.
The complete return will determine how the deal should be evaluated from Cincinnati’s perspective. Cleveland’s objective is already much clearer. The Guardians wanted another accomplished hitter, and they landed one who is producing an .820 OPS and arrives with postseason experience.
After adding Griffin to the rotation and Lowe to the lineup, Cleveland has become one of the unmistakable winners of deadline day.
