Howard Jordan has been hired as the head football coach at Groves — taking over for Calvin Wells, who led the program for the last four seasons.
The Rebel football team has struggled, with the last playoff appearance coming in 2010 under former coach Greg Hunter. The last winning season for Groves was when the Rebels went 6-4 under Mike Martin in 2014 and that was the last time the Rebels won more than two games. Groves went 0-10 last season and has lost 16 games in a row.
But Jordan, 36, has embraced the challenge of trying to turn things around for a school that makes the move from Class 3A to Class 5A next season.
"I think we have a lot of good athletes here and a lot of big bodies," Jordan said. "My job is to help our kids develop through training. I think it's going to be something we can fix."
Jordan played high school football at Turner County, where he was a standout linebacker and running back. He was also a two-time state wrestling champion, taking titles at 171 pounds and 189 pounds as a junior and senior. Jordan said he will coach the wrestling team at Groves and also coach track and field.
He went on to play football at Concord University.
Jordan has an impressive coaching résumé including three years as an assistant at Irwin County, that included three appearances in the state finals and a state title in 2019. He followed with stints at Greenville High, Lithonia High, Hephzibah and most recently at Westside-Macon. He has been a defensive coordinator, assistant head coach and has a focus on strength and conditioning.
Groves athletic director Kevin Evans said he thinks Jordan is going to be a great addition to the school.
"Coach Jordan knows the game, he has the schemes and he relates well with the kids," Evans said. "But what really drew me into him is his energy — he is ready to work and has that fire. I think he's going to be huge for us."
